Ferrum Posts 39-38 Come-from-Behind Football Win Over Emory & Henry

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College defeated Emory & Henry College 39-38 in non-conference football action Saturday, Sept. 3, in front of a crowd of 4,156 fans at W.B. Adams Stadium. The game was the first annual Crooked Road Classic and the career head coaching debut for Ferrum's Rob Grande, who spent the past 11 years as an assistant coach at Emory & Henry.

The Panthers trailed 21-0 in the second quarter and 31-15 early in the fourth quarter. Ferrum tied the game at 31-31 with 1:17 left to play on two fourth-quarter touchdowns and a pair of two-point PAT conversions. Emory & Henry's Kendrick Kube then returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to put the Wasps out in front 38-31 with 1:00 showing on the clock.

The Panthers then marched 68 yards in five plays, capped by Harvey Taylor's bullet scoring pass to Johnny White to make it 38-37. Taylor converted the go-ahead two-point PAT when he plunged into the end zone with seven seconds left on the clock for the win. It was Ferrum's fourth 2-PAT of the game

Freshman Brian Mann rushed for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 28 carries in his collegiate debut for Ferrum (1-0). Taylor was 16-28 passing for 227 yards and three touchdowns. White finished with 10 receptions for 105 yards and a score. Defensively, Billy Higgins led Ferrum with nine tackles in his first college game.

Kevin Saxton was 24-42 passing for 235 yards and two touchdowns for Emory & Henry (0-1). Justin Banks led the Wasp defense with 11 tackles.

Ferrum will be on the road Saturday, Sept. 10, at Shenandoah University. Kickoff for the non-conference game is 7 p.m. in Winchester, Virginia.
