Blue Devils down Pointers in thriller in final home game

More news about: UW-Stout

MENOMONIE (November 7, 2015) - UW-Stout gave up a 17 point lead to fall behind 31-27, but the Blue Devils kept battling as Brian Alvarez caught a 73-yard pass to the UW-Stevens Point 7, and two plays later quarterback Hank Kujak hit brother Reggie Kujak for a 2-yard TD play and Stout took a 34-31 win over the Pointers Saturday at Williams Stadium on Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day.

The Blue Devils (3-6, 2-4 WIAC) went down early in the first quarter, 7-0, after a four yard run by the Pointers' DeJuan Wright. They then fired back with two consecutive short-yardage touchdown runs by senior John Redepenning. These two touchdowns were the first two of Redepenning's career. In the second quarter, Stout capitalized once more. Senior Hank Kujak threw a 70-yard pass to Jordan Dabney on the first play of the drive. This put Stout up 21-10 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, Stout gave up a 17 point lead, but kept fighting. Going into the fourth quarter, the Pointers (4-5, 2-4 WIAC) had brought the game to within 10 points, and then managed to go ahead 31-27 after two consecutive touchdowns. With less than 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Kujak connected with fellow senior Brian Alvarez on a 73-yard pass to bring the Blue Devils down to the Stevens Point seven yard line. On third down and goal Hank Kujak connected with fellow senior Reggie Kujak for a two yard pass that would seal the game for the Blue Devils. The Pointers failed to kick the game-winning 56-yard field goal as time expired.

Pointers' quarterback Kyle Larson threw for 253 yards and one touchdown; while running back Wright ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 21 rushes.

Seniors shined on both sides of the ball for the Blue Devils. Hank Kujak threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns on 31 attempts. Pedepenning ran for two touchdowns. Alvarez caught five passes for 144 yards and Reggie Kujak had three receptions for 38 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Kyle Hoefft recorded 17 tackles including a sack and two tackles for loss. Collin Laursen had seven total tackles, while Kevin Houts had 4 tackles, a sack and one tackle for loss.

The Blue Devils will look to play well in their last contest of the season next weekend as the play at UW-Whitewater on November 14 at 2 p.m.
