Football Drops High-Scoring Affair with Castleton

More news about: SUNY-Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Football team returned home for the first time in three weeks, and fell to the Castleton Spartans by the score of 49-34 on Reinhart Field.

The Privateers led in most offensive categories, racking up 289 yards on the ground and 266 through the air for 555 yards of total offense on the afternoon.

Senior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) led the team with a Maritime-record 17 completed passes and 266 passing yards, while also rushing for 116 yards on the ground. During the early stages of the game, Chilcott eclipsed the 1,000 career rushing yard total, becoming the fifth player in program history to reach the milestone. He also threw for two touchdowns and rushed for one throughout the contest.

In addition to Chilcott, junior Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) collected 98 yards on the ground, while classmate Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) collected 57 yards on the ground. Fischetti was Chilcott's top target in the passing game as well with five catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. McKinney had the team's other receiving touchdown as he caught two passes for 43 yards.

Sophomore Jordan Formicola (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) also had a pair of catches for 42 yards, while junior Krystian Cardinal-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) collected 31 yards on the day on three receptions. Sophomore Matt Ward (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), senior Vincent Jones (Cudjoe Key, Fla./Key West) and junior Joe Modica (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) also were on the receiving ends of Chilcott's throws.

Defensively, Maritime's linebackers put together a solid afternoon as senior Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) and sophomore Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) both collected 10 tackles on the afternoon. Senior Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) had eight tackles, while classmate Michael Brunk (Hidden Valley Lake, Calif./Glenwood Springs (Colo.)) had a solid game with six stops. Knight and sophomore Craig Hinrichs (Islip, N.Y./Islip) both had tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Special teams saw junior John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) punt the ball twice for a 36.5-yard average, while sophomore Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) averaged 40 yards per kick on his six kickoffs. Senior Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic (N.J.)) added four extra points on the afternoon as well.

Castleton had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, giving Maritime the football to start the game. Modica, Fischetti and Chilcott all got on the board as the trio combined for 68 yards on 12 attempts to race into the end zone as Chilcott finished off the drive to put the Privateers ahead by a 6-0 score. Dietrich's extra point made it 7-0.

The Spartans responded with a touchdown score of their own to even the score at seven.

Back on offense, the Privateers connected on a 25-yard pickup on a 2nd-and-20 play to pick up a key first down. Several plays later, Chilcott found McKinney out of the backfield for a 38-yard scoring play to put Maritime back up by seven, following the Dietrich extra point.

After a strong performance by the Maritime defense to force a punt, Maritime took over control of the ball with play heading into the second quarter. Cardinal-Charles got in on the scoring action with a seven-yard touchdown score to put the Privateers up by a 21-7 score.

Both teams punted on their next possessions, as Castleton took over with 11:21 left in the opening half. The Spartans needed just one play to march 52 yards down the field to pull back within one score at 21-14. The teams then turned the ball over on their next series, followed by a punt from the Privateers.

Castleton scored on its next drive to tie the game, followed by Maritime responding with a field goal attempt that was blocked. Castleton regained the lead on a touchdown, but missed the extra point to make the score 27-21.

The next series saw Maritime chew up the field rapidly as Chilcott found Cardinal-Charles for 10 yards, and later saw McKinney sprint to the endzone for a 22-yard score. The extra point was blocked as the score was even once again at 27, with play heading into the second half.

Castleton scored quickly to start the third quarter to take a 34-27 lead, and took advantage of another Maritime turnover to jump ahead by a 40-27 score following a failed two-point conversion. The next drive for Maritime saw the Privateers drive 63 yards, but turned the ball over in the endzone to give control back to the Spartans.

To start the fourth quarter, Maritime scored on the drive as Chilcott caught Fischetti over the middle of the field for a 33-yard scoring play. The ensuing onside kick failed as Castleton took over the ball near midfield. The Spartan drive resulted in a 23-yard field goal, with Castleton taking a 43-34 advantage.

Castleton added one more score to cap off the scoring at 49-34.

Maritime (3-4, 1-3 ECFC) will look towards next weekend when the team plays in its final road game of 2015 with a trip to Bangor, Maine for a 12 p.m. kickoff against the Husson Eagles.

Castleton (5-2, 3-1 ECFC) will head on the road for a trip to Anna Maria on October 31 for a 3 p.m. start against the AMCATs.
