Frostburg Falls At Rowan

More news about: Frostburg State

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Frostburg State football team had its five-game winning streak come to end on Saturday with a 15-6 defeat at Rowan in NJAC action.

Both teams sit at 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC following Saturday's game. However, it's the first loss for Frostburg since the second game of the season in mid-September and is the first loss on the road this season.

FSU scored first in the opening quarter and clung to the lead until Rowan's 15 second-half points.

The Bobcats (6-2, 5-2) scored first when freshman Connor Cox connected with freshman tailback Gavin Lavat for a 37-yard touchdown with eight minutes left in the first quarter. It's the fourth-straight game that Cox has thrown for a touchdown and Lavat's first receiving touchdown of the season.

"I'm proud of the fact that our guys were ready to play at the beginning of the game," said Bobcat head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "We just didn't finish the game the way you are supposed to."

Frostburg held onto that 6-0 lead until a pair of second-half touchdowns rallied the Profs to the win. Dante Pinkney tossed a 38-yard touchdown to Zac Frantz early in the third quarter and Withler Marcelin scored on a six-yard run with just 5:47 showing in the fourth as the hosts surged to a 15-6 lead.

"We played hard and our guys gave a solid effort, but you are not going to win many football games in which you lose the turnover battle," added Fitzgerald.

Frostburg turned the ball over six times on the afternoon and Rowan capitalized on two. A fumble in the third led to the touchdown toss, while an interception deep in FSU territory led to the Profs second touchdown in the fourth.

"We (coaches and players) will learn from today and we will be better for it," noted Fitzgerald. "Playing this game at their place with their atmosphere will make us better in the future."

Cox finished the afternoon with 185 yards on 19-of-31 attempts and the first quarter score. He found senior Antonio Wood five times for 37 yards, while fellow senior wideout Myles Burgess finished with five receptions for 36 yards.

Cox also ran the ball 14 times for 38 yards, while Lavat finished with 32 rushing yards (13 carries) and 50 receiving yards (four receptions).

Defensively, senior Salaman Riddell made nine total tackles, behind eight solo stops. Junior defensive end William Sewell made seven tackles, including 1.5 behind the line.

For Rowan, Marcelin ran for 101 yards on 29 carries and a touchdown, while Pinckney threw for 70 yards (5-of-13) and one score.
