Berry uses its defense and a strong third quarter to defeat Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 26, 2015) – Two third-quarter touchdowns, including a pick-six by Kevin Grier, led Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Berry to a 14-3 victory over the Sewanee football team, Saturday, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

It was the first-ever road win by Berry (3-1, 2-0 SAA) in its three-year history. The Vikings also earned their first-ever win over the Tigers. Sewanee (1-3, 0-2 SAA) previously defeated the Vikings in 2014 and 2013.

Neither team got off its offense going in the first half. In fact, both teams combined for six punts and an interception in the first quarter.

Sewanee got on the board first as Callum Wishart connected on a 27-yard field goal with 9:02 left in the second quarter. Wishart's kick capped off a 17-play, 85-yard drive for the Tigers that took 8:28 off the clock.

Unfortunately, Wishart would miss his next field goal late in the half when his 37-yard attempt hit the left upright.

Berry quickly responded to its 3-0 deficit to start the second half. After a pair of Dale Jackson completions to Chris Lilly, and two Jalen Tuggle rushes, Berry had the ball at the Sewanee 27 yard line. Two plays later, Tuggle capped off the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run with 12:41 left in the third.

The Vikings then scored again on the Tigers' next possession. On third-and-11 from the Sewanee 34, Tiger quarterback Cody Daniel was picked off by Grier for the 53-yard touchdown.

Sewanee did move the ball on its next drive, marching 63 yards on 13 plays. Again Wishart was not able to convert his field goal try into points as Berry's Kreg Keiffer blocked the 22-yard attempt.

From there, Berry limited Sewanee to three first downs the rest of the game.

Overall, neither offense had great numbers as Sewanee led in total yards with 261. Berry managed 217 total yards, which included 110 rushing yards.

The Vikings' defense stood out with four sacks and two INTs.

Individually, Daniel finished with a season-high 101 passing yards. Mikey Plancher finished with a team-high 63 rushing yards on seven carries. Divine Maloney led the Tigers in receiving yards with 32.

Tuggle led Berry with 85 rushing yards and a score while Lilly caught four passes for a game-high 70 yards.

Sewanee returns to action with its 116th meeting with rival Rhodes in Memphis, Tenn., next Saturday. That kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
