A strong second half leads rival Rhodes past Sewanee

More news about: Sewanee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2015) – Behind a strong second half, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes slowly pulled away for a 28-10 win over the Sewanee football team, Saturday, at Crain Field.

With the victory, the Lynx retained the Orgill Trophy for the fourth straight season. Rhodes now has a 31-30-1 record in the Orgill Trophy series. Overall, the Tigers still lead the all-time record at 43-37-3.

The Lynx's four-game winning streak over Sewanee is the second-longest in the series since Rhodes won five straight from 2006-2010.

The Lynx struck first as Roc Sherrell capped off a long 16-play drive that covered 80 yards with a seven-yard touchdown run.

That was the only score in the opening half.

Rhodes received the opening kickoff in the third quarter and quickly marched 67 yards in nine plays. After a couple of completions by Lynx reserve quarterback Austin Henyon, the Red and Black signal caller found receiver Jonathan Wiener for a 34-yard touchdown strike. Tucker Nichols's extra point then made the score 14-0 in favor of Rhodes.

The Tigers finally got on the board, when Callum Wishart connected on a 32-yard field goal with 4:23 left in the third. After stopping Rhodes on fourth and 16 at the Sewanee 26, the Tigers drove 59 yards in nine plays which set up Wishart.

However, any Sewanee momentum was short lived as Rhodes scored on its next possession. On second and four from the Sewanee 23, Henyon again found Wiener for the score.

The Lynx duo would hookup one more time as Henyon tossed another 23-yard touchdown pass to Wiener to start the fourth quarter.

Sewanee finally found the end zone midway through the fourth as reserve quarterback Kevin Bolakcompleted a 16-yard touchdown pass to Steven Hearn.

Overall, Rhodes dominated in total yards with 391 yards of total offense. A big key for the Lynx was their ability to pass. Starter Blake Box finished with 251 passing yards while Henyon competed seven passes for 119 yards and three scores.

Sewanee's offense was led by freshman Allan Parrott, who finished with 52 rushing yards and 32 receiving yards.

Linebacker Tony Dykes led the defense with nine tackles while Glenn Ireland finished with seven. Senior Grant Fuller also played well with six tackles, one sack, and three tackles for a loss.

Sewanee will now take a week off before returning to action Oct. 17 against Washington University. The Tigers and Wash. U are scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. on Family Weekend at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
