Bulldog Football Stumbles to CMS Stags in Heartbreaker

More news about: Redlands

The University of Redlands football team traveled to face the Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown on Saturday afternoon.  After the teams traded leads throughout most of the game, the Bulldogs held a slight 21-19 advantage with plenty of time left on the fourth-quarter clock.  However, Redlands struggled to take advantage, while the Stags produced a late-game, clock-eating drive that led to the 23-25 loss for the Maroon and Gray.

CMS struck first with a 24-yard field goal, before senior quarterback Kevin Russell (Lacey, WA) fired off five passes on a seven-play drive for a Bulldog touchdown.  His longest pass went to junior wide receiver Kevin Johnson(Discovery Bay, CA) for 24 yards, setting up senior running back Curtis Tanquary's (San Jose, CA) one-yard jaunt for his fourth score of the season.

After the Stags aired out the offense with a 54-yard strike on their ensuing possession, the Bulldogs quickly responded with a scoring drive of their own to start the second quarter.  This time, sophomore wide receiver Alex Andrighetto (Portola Valley, CA) moved the ball 28 yards on a key reception, before junior running back Devin Appleton (San Jose, CA) broke open a 29-yard carry to the house for Redlands' 14-10 lead.

Another Stag field goal cut the deficit to one at the halftime break.

Russell came to life on the ground with a 36-yard scoring scamper to cap off an efficient two-play drive late in the third frame.

After CMS scored a touchdown with 12:57 left in the final quarter, the Bulldogs gained the ball on two more possessions, one of which came off of a defensive interception.  But, the Maroon and Gray struggled to move the ball and was forced to punt, allowing the Stags to put together their game-winning score.

Senior kicker Sean Murray (Seattle, WA) performed admirably for the Bulldogs, nailing all three point-after tries and converting three touchbacks on four kick-offs.

Senior defensive back Colin Spencer (Olivet, MI), sophomore defensive back Davis Peralta (Murrieta, CA), junior defensive back Aaron Mandell (Seattle, WA), and junior linebackerJustin Lantz (Corona, CA) combined forces for the Bulldogs' top tacklers with 12 hits apiece.  Spencer was also credited with an interception, while Mandell notched a break-up.

The Bulldogs (2-3, 2-1 SCIAC) strive to bounce back on Saturday, October 24, when they host SCIAC-leading University of La Verne for Homecoming at 7 p.m. in Ted Runner Stadium.
