#22/23 ROWAN FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 59-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The #22/23 Rowan University football team recorded a 59-0 shutout over Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Profs have an overall record of 5-1 and they are 4-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Knights are 0-6 overall with a 0-5 conference mark.

 

Running back Withler Marcelin (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp) ran the ball 12 times for 105 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. His four scores breaks the program record for rushing touchdowns in a game. Running back Quincey Lambert (fr. Browns Mills, NJ/Pembertron Twp.) touched the ball six times for 51 yards and one score. Running back Gawain Bragg (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) had 10 rushes for 50 yards and one touchdown.

 

Quarterback Dante Pinckney (so. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) completed eight passes in 15 attempts for 130 yards and a touchdown. Wideout Todd Guillaume (sr. Irvington, NJ/Immaculate Conception) caught two passes for 49 yards. Wide receiver Jamel Smith (so. Pine Hill, NJ/New Egypt) made two catches for 42 yards and one score.

 

Linebacker Darren Dungee (sr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) tallied seven tackles and an interception. Linebacker Ryan Brenner (jr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) accumulated six tackles, one sack (6 yards) and 1.5 tackles for a loss (7 yards). Defensive lineman Sebastian Ljoka (sr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) collected six tackles, including 1.5 for a loss (2 yards).

 

For Southern Virginia, quarterback Jacob Hatch (fr. Calera, AL/Chilton County) threw for 39 yards (6-22). Running back Jared Watts (so. Fairview, UT/North Sanpete) rushed 15 times for 41 yards. Tight end Michael Carroll (so. McKinney, TX/Liberty) caught three passes for 29 yards. Linebacker Bill Katoa (jr. St. George, UT/Dixie) made eight stops. Defensive lineman Sam Mellor (sr. Colfax, WA/Colfax) and defensive back Morgan Smith (fr. Newport Richey, FL/Gulf) each had seven tackles. Mellor also recorded two tackles for a loss (4 yards).

 

Marcelin hit the end zone three times in the first quarter. He capped a five-play, 59-yard drive on a 39-yard run with 12:48 to play. Following Dungee's 28-yard interception, Marcelin ran the ball in from eight-yards out for a 14-0 lead (11:00). Popper's 15-yard pick put the Profs on the 13-yard line. Marcelin punched the ball across the goal line from three yards away (9:22). Bragg extended the lead to 28-0, scoring on a nine-yard scamper with 2:17 on the clock. The drive traveled 64 yards on seven plays.

 

In the second, Smith caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Pinckney at the 8:29 mark. The score ended a five-play, 61-yard drive. Marcelin scored for the fourth time on a five-yard run to make the score 42-0 with 28-seconds to remaining in the first half.

 

Lambert broke free for a 40-yard run into the end zone at 11:05 of the third. Kicker Tyler Knighton (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) knocked a 25-yard kick (3:11) through the up rights to extend Rowan's lead to 42-0. Running back John Mannion (fr. Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) completed the 10-play, 53-yard drive, running the ball in from five-yards with 11:49 to pay in the fourth quarter.

 

Rowan travels to #4 Wesley College on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
