William Paterson Football Falls at No. 23 Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD. – The William Paterson football team (1-5, 0-5 NJAC) fell at No. 23 Salisbury (4-1, 4-0 NJAC), 62-33, Oct. 17.

 

The Sea Gulls got onto the scoreboard thanks to a 40-yard Ryan Jones run 5:29 into the contest, but senior running back Dwaine Dabney (Summit, N.J./Summit) answered with an 88-yard carry of his own just 74 seconds later. Freshman Nick DeAngelis (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) kicked the extra point and the game was tied at 7-7.

 

Senior Jerome Johnson pushed Salisbury back ahead with his 10-yard rushing touchdown (14-7, 1:28, first quarter), then added a 36-yard TD for a 21-7 margin 1:03 into the second period.

 

Junior Connor Canonico's 29-yard carry extended the Sea Gulls' lead to 28-7 with 9:38 left in the first half, but Dabney ripped off a 93-yard run for his second touchdown of the day and a 28-14 contest with 3:41 on the clock.

 

Jones crossed the goal line from seven yards out but the PAT attempt failed, making it a 34-14 score 2:50 before halftime.

 

Senior running back Darius Kersey (Dover, N.J./Dover) had the Pioneers' third big scoring play of the day, a 74-yard rush, but DeAngelis couldn't convert the point-after attempt, leaving it a 34-20 score with 1:47 left.

 

Jones threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to senior Isaiah Taylor with 37 seconds remaining in the half, allowing Salisbury to enter the locker room with a 41-20 edge.

 

The Sea Gulls scored on their first possession of the second half, using a two-yard Canonico rush for a 48-20 lead with 10:30 on the clock, then added a 12-yard Dandre Dennis scoring play at the 1:26 mark of the third quarter (55-20).

 

Senior quarterback Anthony DiMarsico (Stony Point, N.Y./Suffern) and junior running back Malcolm Robinson (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) connected for a 77-yard score through the air (55-26, 0:26) for the Pioneers' fourth touchdown of the day, but Salisbury answered with a Dennis five-yard rush to open the fourth quarter (62-26, 13:38).

 

The Pioneers finished the scoring with a 17-yard pass from DiMarsico to Kersey with 5:44 remaining.

 

DiMarsico finished 15-for-20 for 159 yards and two touchdowns, while Dabney carried 12 times for 176 yards and two scores. Kersey gained 85 yards and scored a touchdown on five carries, and caught seven passes for 49 yards and a score.

 

Senior linebacker Carlo Caponetta (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) posted a game-high 15 tackles, senior defensive back Tom Hennessy (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) had eight stops and junior defensive back Pat Moran (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) tallied seven tackles and a pass breakup.

 

Jones finished 2-for-7 for 93 yards and a TD under center for Salisbury. Johnson rushed eight times for 204 yards and two scores, and Canonico posted 15 carries for 164 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

 

Junior defensive back Christian Wilson, senior defensive back Mike Hale and senior linebacker Nick Batastini led the Sea Gull defense with six tackles apiece.

 

William Paterson will host Southern Virginia Saturday, Oct. 24, at 12:00 p.m.
