ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team won the West Texas Baptist bowl with a 49-7 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday after at Shelton Stadium.

HSU took control on the opening possession of the game. Wayland Baptist took the opening kickoff but Kylon Mills stuck his head in the first play of the game and forced a fumble. HSU cashed it in for a touchdown four plays later when Weston Garner avoided a rush and found Reese Childress for a 7-yard touchdown pass.

Mills was at it again in the second possession as he picked off a Payson Bain pass. The Cowboys missed a field goal however. HSU forced a quick three-and-out and HSU went 51 yards in eight plays and Garner found the endzone with his legs from two yards out.

The Cowboys forced a third turnover of the first quarter on the next rive when Tavish Leffallknocked the ball away from V.J. Gomez and Korey Zavala recovered it.

Garner then hit Jessie Ramos on a 42-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.

HSU forced another punt and the Cowboys went 61 yards in nine plays and Ryan Breton found Alex Bell for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 35-0 and it stayed that way through halftime.

The Cowboys went up top to Jessie Ramos for a 66-yard touchdown pass from Garner on the first play of the second half and that ended the day for the Cowboy offensive starters with a 42-0 lead.

WBU lined up for a 59-yard field goal on the next drive but the snap got away and HSU recorded a tackle for loss at the 50 to set up a short field. Breton scored on a 2-yard touchdown run and it was 49-0 with 4:59 to play in the third.

WBU scored the only other points in the game on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Bain to Devonte Hayden.

The Cowboys rolled up 600 yards of offense with 426 through the air and another 174 on the ground. HSU forced three turnovers, all in the first quarter, and held the Pioneers to 270 yards of offense on 73 plays, just 3.7 yards per play.

Jessie Ramos caught 10 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. He also broke the HSU career all-purpose yardage record of Collin McCormick. He now has 4,706 career all-purpose yards.

The Cowboys had an all-around good defensive effort with 11 different Cowboys recording between four and six tackles. Ryne Lewis and Trent Walker each had two sacks. Mills had six tackles, forced a fumble, had an interception and broke up three passes. HSU had seven sacks in the game.
