Red Devils shut out Juniata in Centennial opener

More news about: Dickinson

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team jumped out to an early lead on Juniata, scoring 10 first quarter points. That would be all they needed and all the scoring for the game as the Red Devils claim the Centennial Conference opener, 10-0, at Biddle Field.

Senior Anders Overhaug stepped into the tailback spot and ran for 157 yards on 28 carries to jump start the Red Devil offense.

Dickinson punted on its first possession but senior Teddy Airoldi dove on a fumble after a Juniata miscue in the backfield, giving the Devils the ball on the Eagles' 16 yard line.

Dickinson moved the ball to the four yard line but were unable to punch the ball into the end zone. First-year kicker Stephen Walker converted a 25 yard field-goal to put the Red Devils on the board at the 9:16 mark.

Following a punt, the Red Devils moved the ball well as senior quarterback David Clemens led them on an 82 yard scoring drive. Overhaug rushed for 38 yards on the drive with senior fullback Chris Soulas and Clemens adding to the charge.

Overhaug dove in from the one to close out the scoring with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter, but there was still plenty of action remaining in the game.

The teams traded punts throughout the second quarter and the Devils tried a 46 yard field-goal at the end of the half, but were unable to split the uprights, holding the 10-0 advantage heading into the break.

Following a pair of punts to open the second half, the Red Devils came up big on fourth down as senior captain Pat Schlecker made the stop to force a turnover. The Eagles held on fourth down to return the favor, on the next possession.

The excitement was short-lived on the Juniata sideline as senior Jack Margavitch picked-off Hank Coyne at the Devils' 39 yard line on the very next play.

The Red Devil defense continued to hold strong and kept Juniata in check to close out the game. They held the Eagles to minus seven yards rushing in the fourth quarter, led by a big sack from junior Kevin Sherry.

Sherry recorded three sacks for minus 18 yards on the day while the other defensive captain, Airoldi, sacked Coyne for a loss of 11 to stall a Juniata drive, late in the first half.

The offensive line was outstanding all afternoon, opening huge holes as Dickinson racked up 339 yards on the ground. Overhaug was quick to credit the offensive line, as well as Soulas to help him break free for 157 yards on the day. Soulas had some nice carries as well, plowing his way to 93 yards, just shy of the century mark as well.

Clemens tucked the ball and ran for 85 yards while completing 9-of-13 passes for 48 more.

Coyne finished 12-for-30 on the day, passing for 132 yards while Donovan Cobb had a huge outing on the defensive side of the ball, recording a game-high 17 tackles.

The Red Devils tallied four sacks on day. Jake Myers and Schlecker each led the Devils with eight tackles. Sherry, Margavitch and Airoldi each finished with six stops.

The Red Devils pull even at 1-1 overall and start 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Susquehanna University next Saturday for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
