Blue Jays Drop Season Opener to SAGU, 30-17

The Westminster football team dropped their season opener to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) on Saturday, September 5. The 30-17 loss starts the Westminster Blue Jay season with a 0-1 record heading into conference play.

SAGU scored first in the game with a 23-yard touchdown pass with 10:39 left in the first quarter. The Blue Jays were unable to covert on their possession, but settled for a 33-yard field goal by senior Kevin Ludwig to put their first points on the board with 2:12 remaining in the first. The first quarter ended with the SAGU Lions leading 7-3. 

SAGU hit a 40-yard field goal just over four minutes into the second quarter to take a 10-3 lead. SAGU had possession on their own 36-yard line with 3:55 on the clock, but senior Carlos Weeden Jr. grabbed the interception and returned it into the endzone. Ludwig completed the play with the good point after attempt, tying the game at 10-10. SAGU took back the lead just before heading into halftime with a 42-yard field goal.

The Blue Jays had a three point disadvantage heading into the second half, 13-10. SAGU scored 17 more points throughout the third and fourth quarter to take the 30-10 lead. 

With 3:16 left in the game, the Blue Jays scored their first offensive points. Sophomore quarterback Trent White connected with freshman wide receiver Matt Quarles for a 15-yard touchdown. Ludwig connected again on the PAT, bringing  the score to 30-17. 

The Lions and the Blue Jays remained scoreless in the final three minutes of the game, ending the game with a 30-17 Blue Jay loss.

The Blue Jays begin conference play with their home opener on Saturday, September 12. They host Iowa Wesleyan at 1:00 pm at Priest Field. Live video and statistics will be available.
