Turnovers Cost Warriors in Shootout

SHERMAN, Texas - The Hendrix College football team committed five second half turnovers in a wild 55-41 season-opening loss to Austin College at Apple Stadium Saturday afternoon.

After a 14-7 lead for the Kangaroos (1-0) in the first quarter, the teams scored 28 points each in the second, giving AC a 42-35 lead headed into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, Warrior quarterback Seth Peters scored on a six-yard scramble to pull within one point with 14:53 to play. The ensuing extra point was missed, allowing the 'Roos to maintain a 42-41 advantage.

Junior defensive end Tyler Clifton ended Austin's next possession with an 11-yard interception return. The Warriors had a shot to score a minute later, but was picked off by 'Roo defensive back Leon Melontree in the endzone. Austin added another touchdown on 11-play, 80-yard drive to give them a 49-41 lead with 6:25 to play. A Hendrix fumble led to a 43-yard field goal from Javi Reynoso and another interception let Reynoso hit a second 43-yarder for the final score of the game.

Hendrix rattled off 87 plays for 523 yards (6.0 yards per play). Austin ran 89 plays for 605 yards (6.8 per play). The 'Roos committed three turnovers of their own.

Hendrix Notes
- Peters broke the school record for pass attempts. He went 28-of-50 for 378 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.
- Junior Nate Hodapp caught six balls for a career-high 125 yards and two touchdowns.
- Senior Jay Jaffers added four catches for a career-best 64 yards.
- Peters also found Ethan Hoppe and Caleb Brake on touchdown connections.
- Junior Dayton Winn rushed 19 times for 118 yards, the 10th century mark of his career.
- Sophomore Mike Goodrich scored on a 13-yard run in the second quarter.
- Senior safety Caleb Shannon led the defense with 12 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
- Junior Ben Cunningham came up with nine tackles, including a sack and sophomore Jake Brantley had a career-high nine tackles, including one for a loss.
- Along with his interception, Clifton also had a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
- Junior defensive linemen Stephen Stearman and Harrison Newton also combined for a sack.
- Linebackers Jared Goff and Thomas Eddlemon each had seven tackles.
- Sophomore corner Deric Witherspoon had a one-yard interception return

Austin Notes
- Madison Ross rushed 36 times for 190 yards and three scores. He also had a 68-yard touchdown catch.
- Cooper Woodyard passed for 311 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-30 and two picks. He also rushed 13 times for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
- Kyle Crawford led the receivers with five catches for 87 yards and a score.
- Brooks Ward recorded 13 tackles and Charles Eneh added 10 more.
- Hayden Schilling and Trey Croft each recorded sacks.

Up Next
Hendrix will play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12. against Lyon at 6 p.m. The dedication of the new Crafton-Faulkner Field will occur before kickoff.
