LOCATION:  Memorial Stadium, Westerville, Ohio

RECORDS:  Buffalo State (1-0), Otterbein (0-1)

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE

  • Shaq Frederick (Brooklyn/Holy Cross) paced the Bengals' defense with 16 tackles and a forced fumble, while Marquis Artis (Amherst/Amherst) added nine stops including two for loss.
  • Nick Anderson (Sloan/JFK), Rey Jordan (Buffalo/McKinley), Nic Bacon (E. Syracuse/Chittenango), and Brett Ellers (Wantagh/MacArthur) all had interceptions for the Bengals.
  • Tre Jones (Rochester/Greece-Athena) paced the Buffalo State ground attack with 136 yards on 16 carries, including two touchdowns.  Dale Stewart (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) and Antoine Holloman (Brooklyn/Abraham Lincoln) bolstered the running game.  Stewart had 77 yards on eight carries with a touchdown, and Holloman added 72 yards on seven carries with a score.
  • Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) was just 8 for 15 for 88 yards under center, as Dan Serignese (Port Jefferson/Port Jefferson) and Aaron Ertel (Depew/Depew) also saw time at quarterback.  Serignese was 7 for 13 for 63 yards, and Ertel was 2 for 3 for 11 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Buffalo State piled up 501 yards of total offense, including 339 yards on the ground, while Otterbein finished with just 15 rushing yards and 99 passing yards.
  • Buffalo State finished with four interceptions and a fumble recovery.
  • Jones opened the scoring on an 81-yard touchdown scamper and the Bengals were off to the races.
  • Both of Otterbein's first quarter possessions ended in interceptions.
  • Buffalo State blew the game open with three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 26-0 lead into halftime.
  • Jones found the end zone on a 2-yard run, followed by a 13-yard scoring carry by Stewart, and then Holloman scored on a 15-yard run.
  • Otterbein assembled a promising looking drive early in the third quarter, but a fourth Buffalo State interception thwarted the scoring attempt.  The Bengals answered with a long drive of their own, but missed a short field goal for the second time of the day to preserve a scoreless third quarter.
  • Marc Montana's (E. Amherst/St. Joe's) 25-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter completed the scoring.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The shutout was the first for Buffalo State since a 27-0 victory over the Apprentice School on Oct. 22, 2005.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Buffalo State and Otterbein.

FOR THE FOES

  • Kevan Green was one of three quarterbacks to play for the Cardinals, finishing 9 of 14 for 76 yards with three interceptions.
  • Drew Ervin led the Otterbein defense with 14 tackles, while Jordan Bonifas had 11 stops, and Nick Toledo had 10.

COACH'S CORNER

  • "Overall it was a good team effort and I am extremely proud of the job we did on defense today," said Buffalo State head coach Jerry Boyes.  "The heat created difficult conditions out there, and the fact that our players handled it so well is a testament to their hard work on conditioning in the offseason and during camp.
