Hiram falls in season opener to Westminster, 17-9

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College football team fell in its 2015 season opener to Westminster (Pa.) by a 17-9 score on Saturday night at Henry Field.

The Terriers are now 0-1 on the young season, while the Titans are 1-0.

On defense, junior Kyle Burchett (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Harding) had a team-high 11 tackles in the contest.

Hiram also recorded three interceptions, with senior Ronnie Jones (Aurora, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt), senior Andrew Torres (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner) and sophomore Ross Anderson(Memphis, Tenn./White Station) all picking off Titan quarterback Paul Columbo. Jones also finished the game with eight tackles.

Senior Nate Eaton (South Euclid, Ohio/Walnut Ridge) led the Hiram offense with seven catches for 81 yards. Sophomore Danny Robinson (Labelle, Fla.) had 79 yards rushing on 20 carries.

Sophomore Alec Wells (Aurora, Ohio) three for 233 yards and a touchdown, while adding 17 yards on the ground.

The teams battled through a scoreless first quarter, before Columbo found Jordan Edwards for a 30-yard touchdown pass to give Westminster the 7-0 lead. 

Hiram looked to respond on its next drive as junior David Perkins (Santa, Ana, Calif./Segerstrom) reeled off a 57-yard run. But the Terrier drive would stall and Westminster took a 7-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Terriers were able to get on the board on their second drive, when sophomore Sam Conway (Wickliffe, Ohio) converted a 30-yard field goal, cutting Hiram's deficit to 7-3.

In the fourth quarter, Jones intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards to the Westminster 19. But the Terriers were unable to take advantage and Conway pushed a 33-yard field goal wide to the right.

Westminster would counter with a 40-yard field goal to make the score 10-3 with 3:13 to play.

The Terriers would look to respond on their next drive but were forced to punt. The Titans would then put the game away when Kimu Kim broke free for a 53-yard touchdown with 1:31 to go.

Hiram scored a touchdown on the last play of the game, when Wells found senior Britton Lewis (Tampa, Fla./Paul R. Wharton) for a 5-yard score.

The Terrier defense limited the Titans to just 4-of-16 on third downs in the game.

Hiram also outgained Westminster 399-281 in the game.

The Terriers will be off next weekend before opening up NCAC play at Kenyon on September 19. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
