HSU Rolls Over Southwestern, 77-6

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team came out of the gates strong with a 77-6 win over Southwestern on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.

Jessie Ramos scored four first half touchdowns and the Cowboys scored three special teams touchdowns and added a safety.

HSU led 42-0 at halftime and pushed the lead out to 70-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cowboy defense held the Pirates to 230 total yards in the game and forced three turnovers. HSU had 550 yards of offense and did not turn the ball over in the game.

The Cowboys scored first on a 29-yard run by Kerry Sloan in the first quarter, capping a 94-yard drive. After forcing a quick punt, Weston Garner found Ramos for a 53-yard touchdown pass to make it 13-0.

Ramos then returned his first career punt for a touchdown on the next possession going 67 yards for the score. He now has seven return touchdowns in his career.

The Cowboy defense went to work again forced a punt and HSU drove 73 yards in nine plays and Garner found Ramos again for a 13-yard touchdown.

HSU forced another three and out and this time Alex Bell took the punt 51 yards to the end zone to make it 33-0. Randy Hirsch came up with a fourth-down sack on the next drive and Ryan Breton hit Ramos for a 39-yard touchdown to make it 40-0.

Jaelon Collier then blocked a punt for the Cowboys out of the end zone to make it 42-0 at halftime.

HSU forced a punt on the first drive of the second half and then Breton capped off the drive with a 24-yard touchdown to Reese Childress on the next drive.

The Cowboy defense forced another three-and-out and Jeremy Harris blocked the punt and recovered it in the end zone to make it 56-0.

HSU forced a fumble on the next defensive possession and Breton found Bell for a 39-yard touchdown to make it 63-0. Justin Woodard scored on a 1-yard run to make it 70-0 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Southwestern got on the board with a 23-yard touchdown pass from A.J. Daniels to Matt Gillen.

HSU capped the scoring when Childress took a swing pass he made several moves broke a couple of tackles and scampered 87 yards for a touchdown. 

Game Notes

  • HSU quarterbacks were 15-of-19 for 346 yards and six touchdowns.
    • Starter Weston Garner was 9-of-11 for 160 yards and two TDs.
    • Ryan Breton was 4-of-5 for 95 yards and three scores.
    • Luke Bishop was 2-for-2 for 91 yards and a touchdown.
  • HSU ran the ball 41 times for 204 yards and two scores.
  • Kerry Sloan had his fifth straight game with 100 yards as he had 102 yards on 15 carries.
  • Ramos had seven catches for 178 yards and three TDs. He also had 81 yards on three returns.
  • Alex Bell had a punt return TD and a 39-yard TD reception in his first career start.
  • Childress had three catches for 115 yards and two TDs.
  • HSU blocked two punts, one for a TD one for a safety, and returned two for touchdowns.
  • Randy Hirsch had two sacks in the game and three tackles for loss.
  • Zac Richardson, a Georgetown native, had an interception against his hometown team late in the game.
  • Jaelon Collier blocked a punt for a safety.
  • Jeremy Harris blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown.
  • Ramos now has 2,050 career receiving yards, and moved past Mitch Ables to ninth all-time at HSU.
  • Ramos also now has 32 touchdowns in his career, which is tied with Steven Rockwell for fifth all-time at HSU.
  • Spur Hearne led the defense with nine tackles.
  • Southwestern had a 10-drive sequence where it totaled 54 yards on 35 plays from the second drive of the first quarter to the second drive of the third quarter.
  • HSU limited the Pirates to 12 drives that lasted either two, three or four plays.
