Austin College Named Silva Defensive Coordinator, adds Manning to Staff

More news about: Austin

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College football program has promoted assistant coach Mike Silva to the position of defensive coordinator, and Antoine Manning has joined the coaching staff, head coach Loren Dawson has announced.

Silva just finished his third season as an assistant for the 'Roos, working with the defensive line. Before coming to Sherman, Silva served as the defensive coordinator at McPherson College in Kansas, where he was also a standout defensive lineman in college. Over the past three seasons, Silva has coached seven 'Roo defensive linemen to All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors, including three players in the 2014 season.

During his time at McPherson, Silva coached 27 All-Conference players and five All-America selections. His first season as defensive coordinator, his team ranked in the top 10 nationally in rushing defense and pass defense efficiency, and led the team's conference in both rushing defense and passing defense. Silva helped guide McPherson to a No. 5-ranking nationally that year, winning the program's first conference championship in 52 years.

Manning comes to Sherman from McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, and will join the 'Roos as the team's defensive backs coach. While at McKendree, Manning coached defensive backs and served as the team's recruiting coordinator. Prior to coaching at McKendree, Manning also served as an assistant at Rockford College, Ohio Northern University, Lincoln University, Cornell College (Iowa), South Dakota State University, and Kentucky Wesleyan College.

He has also spent time working as an assistant at Midland Lutheran College and Eureka College. Over the course of his coaching career, Manning has worked with several players who have gone on to play in the professional ranks both in the NFL and the Canadian Football League. Among the players he has coached is current Dallas Cowboys defensive end Kenneth Boatright, who he coached at Midland Lutheran. Boatright also won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in 2013.

Manning has also coached JaRon Harris, a former wide receiver with the Green Bay Packers, as well as wide receiver Micah Johnson and defensive back O'Hara Fluellen. Johnson played for the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals and also spent some time in the CFL, while Fluellen played for the Seahawks before moving on to play for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL last season.

Manning is a 2004 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and earned his master's degree from South Dakota State University in 2008.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
