PELLA, Iowa - The steady snowfall just prior to kick-off on Saturday made the conditions favorable for keeping the game on the ground. Unfortunate for the Spartans, it was the host Central College Dutch who racked up over 400 yards rushing in the white, snowy conditions on Saturday en route to a 38-7 victory over the Spartans.
The Spartans only score of the afternoon was a 41 yard pass from Zach Fry to Tyler Rutenbeck, a four play 75 yard drive in 29 seconds. Fry finished completing 11-30 pass attempts in the challenging conditions. Fry completed nearly 60% of his passes for 2,294 yards and 18 touchdowns. Alec Arvanitakis rushed 11 times for 63 yards. Rutenbeck caught three passes for 60 yards, he would finish the season with 66 catches for 918 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Dutch owned the possession time with 40:32 after holding the Spartans to 19:28 and a low 2-11 in third down conversions. UD would turn the ball over three times in the loss while the Dutch luck would bounce their way after fumbling three times and recovering all three.
Everett Schwer collected six solo, 11 assisted tackles, and a forced fumble. Vincent Whipple was the only other Spartan to earn double digit tackles with 12.
The Spartans finish the 2014 season with a 4-6 overall record and a 3-4 IIAC mark to claim fifth place of the league standings.
