Brockport Offense Stumbles in Loss to Ithaca

Senior Shireem Cobb (Valley Stream, NY/Sewanahka) and sophomore Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) scored on runs of one and two yards respectively for the only two scores of the day for The College at Brockport Football team Saturday as Ithaca scored a 24-14 victory in an Empire 8 game on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

Ithaca (6-2 overall, 5-2 Empire 8) scored twice in the first quarter with a 33-yard field goal and a one yard run to take a 10- 0 lead. Midway through the second quarter, Brockport (5-3, 3-3) got on the board as Cobb bulled his way through the middle of the line on a second-and-goal play from one yard out to trim the lead to 10-7.

Near the end of the half, Brynell Middleton (Lockport, NY/Lockport) intercepted a long pass to keep the Bombers off the board and the teams went into the halftime intermission with Brockport trailing by three.

Ithaca scored on its first two drives of the third quarter with a pair of short touchdown passes and took a 24-7 lead into the final quarter.

Brockport put together its longest drive of the game late in the fourth quarter as quarterback Chase Venuto (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) drove the Golden Eagles 55 yards in 10 plays as Andrews capped the drive with with a two-yard run up the middle. The play before the TD was a Venuto pass that was intercepted in the end zone but the play was nullified by an Ithaca holding penalty setting up the first-and-goal situation.

Andrews had five carries for 14 yards on the scoring drive and ended the day with 74 yards on 26 carries. Venuto was 14-for-34 for 169 yards and one interception passing and Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) led Brockport with five receptions and 67 yards.

Defensively, three players had double-digit tackles for the Golden Eagles led by sophomore Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) with 14 stops and one sack. Fellow sophomore James Rupp (Sayville, NY/Sayville) had 12 tackles including a team-high eight solo stops while senior Anthony Bianchi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) had 10 tackles. Freshman Matt Szymanski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had eight tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss.

Punter Ian Gilhousen (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) averaged over 40 yards per punt with eight kicks with two inside the 20 and long kick of 66 yards.
