CHAPMAN 59, OCCIDENTAL 21
ORANGE — Chapman's offense was too tough to stop and the Tigers couldn't get much going on either side of the ball in a loss at Ernie Chapman Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers suffer their first SCIAC defeat of the season, falling to 2-1 in conference and 3-2 overall. They are in a tie for third with Cal Lutheran, one game back of Chapman (3-0) and Redlands (3-0).
Chapman's offensive line set the tone and behind it Jeremiah McKibinns had a big day, running for 103 yards and a touchdown. Cody Chapple added 91 yards and two scores. As a group, the Panthers ran for 343 yards on the game.
Panthers quarterback Michael Lahey was good with his legs and his arm, throwing for 194 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while running for 43.
Player of the Game: Oxy's Samuel Stekol finished with seven catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns. The senior All-SCIAC wide receiver is leading the SCIAC in receiving yards per game (145.3) and touchdown receptions (6).
Turning Point: After the Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead, Oxy had its best drive of the first half, ending with a Samuel Crizer touchdown pass to Stekol.
Chapman drove all the way back down the field. As Chapple finished the 75-yard scoring drive with a 2-yard run, the ball popped loose near the goal line and Oxy picked it up with room to run. But the play was whistled dead and the officials decided Chapple had broken the line to gain before the ball came out. Had he been short, Oxy almost surely would have had a game-tying fumble recovery for a touchdown.
It was the type of big play Oxy's defense was going to need against the SCIAC's top-ranked offense (539.5 yards per game).
Instead of the game being tied at 14 at the end of the first quarter, Chapman jumped in front 21-7 and had all the momentum it needed to pull away for a big victory.
Oxy struggled on its next couple of drives and the Panthers kept scoring, taking a 38-7 lead into halftime.
Bryan Scott, who finished with 253 yards passing, found Stekol for a touchdown in the third quarter and Max Gruber scored a late rushing touchdown, but Oxy didn't get anything else and the Panthers added 21 points in the second half.
Next Game: The Tigers get a chance to bounce back during Homecoming Weekend against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.
