Fisher Wins Big At Alfred State

More news about: St. John Fisher

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College football team saw eight different players find the end zone as the visiting Cardinals blanked Alfred State 61-0 on Saturday at Pioneer Stadium.  It was the first time Fisher held an opponent scoreless since it blanked Otterbein University 28-0 to open up the 2013 season.

With the win No. 15 Fisher improves to 6-1 overall, while Alfred State falls to 2-5.

The Fisher defense was up to the challenge of stopping Rasheed Williams, Alfred State's back who was averaging 206 yards per game and topped 100 yards in each of the previous six games.  Williams was held to just two yards on sixteen carries in the game as the Pioneers finished with a -4 net on the ground and just 61 yards of total offense, both school records.

Fisher made good on an early Alfred State turnover as defensive back Anthony Lee jarred the ball loose and Mike Donitzen scooped up the fumble, scampering 28 yards to the Alfred State 12 yard line.  Three plays later, Tyler Fenti found a familiar target, Nathan Nigolian, for a 5-yard score.

On its next possession Fisher converted a long 3rd and 13 as Fenti connected with Rob Riggio behind the defense for a 58-yard touchdown seven minutes into the game.  It was Riggio's first touchdown of the season.

Fenti continued his efficient day on the next drive hooking up with James Chambers on a 27-yard wheel route, his third receiving touchdown of the year to put Fisher up 21-0.

The Cardinals benefited from a drive start at the Alfred 48 late in half as Tony Fusco accounted for all 48 yards on the drive, capped off by a 1-yard score with 1:40 remaining in the half.  Fisher led 28-0 at the break.

After receiving the opening kickoff of the second half , Fisher marched 62 yards on 7 plays with Fenti throwing his fourth touchdown of the day, this time to Mike Collichio for a 20-yard score.  The sophomore wideout now has scored a touchdown in each of the last five games.  Fisher led 34-0 after the missed extra point.

The visiting Cardinals added another touchdown late in the third quarter with Chambers notching a 56-yard scamper on the ground to push Fisher's lead to 41-0 late in the third quarter.

On its next possession running back Jimmy Ross found the end zone for the first time in his career.  The senior rushed for a 4-yard score to make it 47-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

Fisher rattled off its second run over 50 yards midway through the fourth quarter with Steven Strumolo running for a 58-yard score.

The Cardinals final score of the game came on the very next possession with DJ Logory caused a fumble at the Alfred 6, allowing Sammy Hasan to recover the free ball in the end zone for his first career touchdown.

Fenti, who exited the game in the third quarter, finished 10-for-14 for 192 yards and 4 touchdowns to push his season total to 20.

Chambers was the leading rusher for Fisher with 10 carries for 89 yards, while Fusco finished with 73 yards.  Collichio was the top wideout with three receptions for 53 yards.

On the defensive side Lee had a career-high seven tackles joined by Paul Leavell and Bryant MooreRyan Ballard forced two fumbles on the day.

Fisher returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday when it will host Buffalo State on Hall of Fame weekend.
