WATERVILLE, Maine --- On a beautiful fall day in front of a big Family Homecoming Weekend crowd, the Colby College football team played flawlessly in the first half on the way to a 40-0 halftime margin in a 47-14 victory against Hamilton College on Saturday.
Colby (1-4 overall) came into the game having played against four opponents with a combined 14-2 record. The final four games for the Mules are against teams with a 5-11 record heading into Saturday.
Colby sophomore quarterback Gabe Harrington had his best collegiate game, passing for four touchdowns and throwing for 225 yards before leaving the game early.
The Mules could not have asked for a better start against the Continentals (0-5 overall). Colby led 14-0 after less than six minutes and were up 20-0 at the first quarter break.
After forcing a Hamilton punt, the Mules went 59 yards in eight plays to get their first touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Harrington to Ryder Arsenault. Colby running back Jabari Hurdle-Price caught an 18-yard pass and ran for 13 yards on the drive.
Colby's defense set up its second touchdown when Jason Buco intercepted a pass and took it to the Hamilton 41-yard line.
The Mules wasted no time, with Harrington throwing to Luke Duncklee for 41 yards on the first play of the drive for a touchdown.
Colby made it 3-for-3 on scoring drives by going 65 yards on five plays. Mule tight end Glenn Parsons caught a 14-yard pass on the drive before Harrington connected with Alex Kramer on his first collegiate touchdown on a 47-yard play. The extra point was blocked by Hamilton.
After a short punt that was partially blocked by Colby's Ian Dickey, the Mules scored on their fourth consecutive drive. Hurdle-Price had a run of 14 yards, Harrington connected with Kramer for 12 yards, and Duncklee caught a 19-yard pass to get the ball to the Hamilton 1-yard line. Duncklee scored from 1 yard out on a run for his second score and a 27-0 lead with 9:39 left to halftime.
Arsenault caught his second touchdown of the game on an 11-yard pass play from Harrington to make the score 33-0 (extra point missed) with 3:49 to go. The big play on the drive was Parsons' 28-yard catch and Hamilton had a personal foul on the play.
After a three-and-out by Hamilton, Colby added the final touchdown with just 27 seconds left to intermission. Duncklee scored his third touchdown on another 1-yard scoring run. Arsenault caught an 18-yard pass on the drive.
With Harrington out of the game in the third quarter, the Continentals set up their first score thanks to an interception by John Phelan at the Colby 32-yard line. Hamilton used eight plays to go 32 yards and got on the board on a 1-yard scoring run by Jeff Hopsicker with 5:47 left in the third quarter.
Hamilton's defense held on downs at its own 1-yard line, but the Mules scored a play later on a fumble recovery by Henry Wallrapp in the end zone for Colby's final points.
