Box Score

PAXTON, Mass. – The Maritime Privateers football team picked up its first Eastern Collegiate Football Conference win over the Anna Maria AMCATs on the season by the score of 40-12 on Saturday afternoon on AMCAT field.

The Privateers were led by offensively by junior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) with 166 yards of total offense, including 107 yards in the air and 59 on the ground. Chilcott also led the team with two rushing touchdowns.

Senior Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's) ran the ball for a game-high 95 yards and also had a score on the ground. Sophomore Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) caught Chilcott's lone passing touchdown for a 24-yard strike.

Linebackers Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) and Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) led the defensive unit with eight tackles apiece, with Knight collecting a pair for a loss in yardage. Senior cornerback Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) also had a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown, just the sixth pick-six in program history, and first since Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) had a 25-yard interception return last season against Castleton State.

In addition to the interception, the defense also turned the ball over twice more as junior linebacker Dwayne Lacroix(Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) and freshman defensive back Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) both had fumble recoveries. For Conte, he returned the ball for 54 yards after scooping the ball of the ground.

The special teams unit was led by junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic), who converted all four of his extra point attempts, while also converting on a pair of field goals, both over 40 yards apiece. Rookie Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) averaged just under 62 yards per kickoff, while sophomore punter John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) averaged just under 40 yards per punt.

"It's been a long four weeks and the team has continued to battle so I'm proud of them," said head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes after the game. "It was great to get the first conference win of the season."

The game began with Anna Maria taking the opening kickoff, and the opening drive ending with a punt. Maritime and Anna Maria then exchanged punts on their next respective series, before the Privateers got the ball for the second time on the day. It took Maritime just one play and 10 seconds to score as Gardner barreled ahead for 54 yards to put the first points of the day on the board.

Anna Maria's next series resulted in a fumble that was picked up by Conte and returned for 54 yards to set up the Privateers in prime position to score once again on the AMCAT six-yard line. After a 15-yard penalty backed the Privateers up on third down, Chilcott connected on a 24-yard pass to Fischetti for the team's second touchdown of the day.

The game then progressed into the second quarter with Anna Maria getting the first points of the period with a touchdown on a 17-yard pass. The Privateers responded with a 44-yard field goal from Dietrich as he sent the teams into the locker room with Maritime ahead by a 17-6 score.

After the break, the Privateers needed just nine plays to find the end zone once again as Maritime needed to go 86 yards for the score, the biggest plays of the drive came as Chilcott found senior Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) out of the backfield for a 25-yard gain. The scoring play saw Chilcott dart for a 28-yard touchdown run.

Three possessions later, Anna Maria took over the ball once again and on a 2nd-and-15 play the AMCAT quarterback dropped back to pass and was picked off by Klass, who then returned the ball for 60 yards into the end zone as Maritime added another seven points for the 30-6 lead.

On Maritime's next possession, Arny had his punt blocked on 4th down that was returned to the end zone for the second AMCAT touchdown to pull Anna Maria within 18 points.

The Privateer defense continued to keep the AMCAT offense in check through the remainder of the game and allowed the Maritime offense to continue driving the ball. On the final two Privateer possessions, Chilcott ran for his second touchdown of the game, followed by a 43-yard field goal for Dietrich to cap off the scoring at 40-12.

Maritime (2-4, 1-2 ECFC) will resume league play next weekend when the team returns home to take on Becker, with the kickoff slated for 2 p.m. on Reinhart Field. Anna Maria (0-6, 0-3 ECFC) will faceoff against Norwich next weekend at home in a 3 p.m. start on October 25.
