Shenandoah Outlasts Catholic

More news about: Shenandoah

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Shenandoah University football team has started its first-ever winning streak of the Yoder era thanks to a 24-14 ODAC victory at Catholic University of America Saturday afternoon.

The win also matches the 2013 win total for Shenandoah (4-2, 2-1).

The Hornets led 14-0 at the break and 21-0 late in the third quarter when Catholic (2-4, 0-3) took advantage of a Drew Ferguson fumble in the Cardinals end zone.

Ferguson, who appeared to be down and reaching for the goalline, coughed the ball up where CUA defensive back Richard Roach scooped it up and raced 100-yards for the hosts initial score of the contest.

Catholic then brought itself within seven points by taking just three plays and 33 seconds to drive for its second score.

Now in a dog fight, Shenandoah responded with a 12-play, 43-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard Jacob Newton field goal with 2:33 remaining to give the victors the 24-14 lead.

CUA was able to drive into SU territory on its ensuing drive, but turned the ball over on downs and the Hornets ran out the clock on their final possession of the contest.

Sophomore Cedrick Delaney, who cracked the 100-yard barrier for the fifth straight game, led the Shenandoah offense with 23 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

He had a 34-yard TD in the second quarter and a 19-yard run in the third.

Ferguson was 19 for 27 for 158 yards through the air to help the Hornets to 372 yards in total offense.

The SU defense held Catholic to 124 yards passing and picked off CUA quarterback TJ Tutone one time.

Linebackers Michael Messick and Michael Wroble each had 11 stops for the Shenandoah defense.

Kye Hopkins had the remaining TD for the Hornets, blasting over from the 3 at the 6:42 mark of the first that gave SU the lead for good.

Shenandoah welcomes No. 25 Hampden-Sydney to Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium next Saturday for a 1:00 homecoming contest.
