ADRIAN, Mich. – Emmanuel Stewart rushed for 281 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, to lead Adrian College to a 47-26 victory over Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football action.
The loss snaps Albion's eight-game winning streak against MIAA rivals as the Britons join a group of four teams with 2-1 records in the league. Albion can forge a tie for first place in the league if it can gain a victory at Trine University next Saturday.
Albion gained one first down on its first six offensive possessions.
Adrian's first three possessions resulted in a pair of punts and an interception, but the Bulldogs finished drives in the second quarter. Quarterback Aaron Tenney scored on a 1-yard run and he hooked up with Nathan Hartline for a 42-yard score as Adrian forged a 13-0 lead.
The Albion offense took over at midfield after an interception by Jose Rodriguez. It took the Britons just six plays to cover the distance for their first score, a 6-yard pass from Dominic Bona to Zach Brigham, with 41 seconds left in the first half.
Adrian wasn't satisfied with running out the clock, however, as Tenny and Hartline connected for a 70-yard score.
Albion took the second half kickoff and marched to the Adrian 9-yard line. The big plays were a 21-yard run by Colin Parks and a 26-yard pass from Bona to Cody Crawford. Albion came away empty on a missed field goal.
Adrian went on an 11-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Tenney's 8-yard run, to forge a 26-7 lead midway through the third quarter.
Albion would cut the deficit to two scores three times but the Britons were never able to get closer. Parks scored on runs of 1 and 8 yards and Brigham hauled in a 9-yard pass from Bona.
The backbreaker likely was Stewart's long run on the first play of the fourth quarter. It extended the Adrian lead to 40-20.
Parks gained 137 of Albion's 341 yards on 21 carries (for an average of 6 ½ yards).
