ADA — Ohio Northern led or was tied or for more than 55 minutes on Saturday, but a late score lifted John Carroll to a 17-10 football victory on Homecoming Weekend at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 2-2 overall and are 1-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Blue Streaks improve to 4-0, 3-0.
Northern scored on its first possession and took a quick 7-0 lead, marching 66 yards in just four plays and got into the end zone on a 19-yard TD pass from senior Patrick Angle to junior Devon Price with 3:19 gone.
JCU tied the game at 7-7 on a 3-yard run by Tommy Michals with 12:14 left in the first half.
But ONU answered with a 21-yard field goal by junior Andrew DiMario with 57 seconds left in the half to go up 10-7.
That lead held up until JCU's Kresimir Ivkovic tied it at 10-10 on a 43-yard field goal with 13:41 left to play.
The Polar Bears then drove to the JCU 30-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs with 9:07 remaining.
Mark Myers hit Aramis Greenwood on a 4-yard touchdown pass with 4:49 left in the game to give the Blue Streaks a 17-10 lead.
ONU would have two more chances with the ball, but would not be able to mount a threat against the JCU defense.
Price led the Polar Bear offense with six receptions for 83 yards and a score and five rushes for 35 yards.
Angle finished the game 16-of-33 passing for 181 yards and a score.
Defensively, senior Dillon Kwiat and sophomore Dan Eller had 10 tackles each to lead ONU.
Michals rushed 32 times for 170 yards and a score, Myers completed 23-of-37 passes for 275 yards and a TD and Greenwood caught nine passes for 138 yards and a TD for John Carroll.
JCU out-gained ONU 445-269 in total offense.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday when they host No. 3-ranked Mount Union at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
