William Paterson Football Can’t Get Past Montclair State, 19-6

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (2-2, 0-1 NJAC) couldn't capitalize on its opportunities against visiting Montclair State (3-1, 1-0 NJAC), dropping a 19-6 football decision Oct. 4.

 

The Pioneers recovered two Red Hawk fumbles, threw an interception into the end zone and missed three field goals, the last one a 50-yarder that was blocked as time expired, to leave the two teams scoreless at halftime.

 

WP received the kickoff to start the second half, but the Pioneers' second interception of the day gave MSU the ball near midfield. A 46-yard pass play eventually led to a Mike Borrelli 23-yard field goal and a 3-0 Red Hawk lead 2:39 into the third quarter.

 

The two teams traded punts before freshman quarterback Austin Fellows (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) threw a pass down the right sideline that junior wide receiver Anthony DiMarsico (Stony Point, N.Y./Suffern) was able to catch after fighting off two defenders, streaking to the goal line for a 45-yard touchdown and a 6-3 William Paterson lead with 6:46 to play in the third. The Pioneers were unable to add the extra point after a bad snap resulted in a failed pass attempt.

 

The Red Hawks answered with a six-play, 63-yard scoring drive that was capped by sophomore running back Denzel Nieves picking up a block and running, untouched, to the left pylon from one yard out. Borrelli kicked the PAT and Montclair State owned a 10-6 advantage with 3:54 left in the period.

 

A sack of Fellows by junior defensive lineman Kevin Bless in the end zone on third-and-10 pushed the Red Hawks ahead by a 12-6 count 6:20 into the final period, and a Nieves one-yard TD off right tackle made it a 19-6 margin with 4:17 to play.

 

Fellows was 22-for-39 for 254 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Senior running back Matt Deiana (Somers, N.Y./Somers) rushed 17 times for 79 yards, and junior running back Darius Kersey (Dover, N.J./Dover) caught 10 passes for 98 yards.

 

Senior linebacker Ben Allen (Ventnor, N.J./Atlantic City) led all defenders with 15 tackles (seven solo), forcing and recovering a fumble.  Junior linebacker Dennis Goodman (Somerset, N.J./Bishop Ahr) posted nine stops (1.0 TFL), and senior defensive lineman Bernardo Nunez (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) finished with seven tackles (1.0 sack) and a fumble recovery.

 

Junior quarterback Ryan Davies went 14-for-25 for 197 yards, while Nieves carried 29 times for 118 yards and two scores. Junior Aaron Williams caught seven passes for 108 yards.

 

Junior defensive back Bill Shimko paced MSU with 12 tackles, and senior defensive back Allen Phillips had nine stops (five solo, 1.5 TFL, 0.5 sack).  

 

William Paterson will visit Rowan Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1:00 p.m.
