FROSTBURG, Md. – Seventh-ranked St. John Fisher raced out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter en route to a 48-7 victory over Frostburg State in Empire 8 action, Saturday.
The Cardinals scored on their first three possessions and added their fourth touchdown on their first drive of the second quarter as they improved their overall record to 3-0 and 2-0 in league play.
Frostburg, 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8, scored its lone touchdown late in the second quarter before SJFC tacked on three second half touchdowns.
Bobcat senior quarterback Ken Emmons threw for 119 yards on 10-of-24 completions. On first and goal at the Fisher five, Emmons completed a pass to junior Mike Ambrose, who made a one handed catch in the back of the end zone with just six seconds left in the first half. Sophomore Isaac Robinson connected on the extra point that narrowed the deficit to 28-7 at the half.
Emmons favorite target was junior wideout Haydan Roberts, who hauled in six receptions for 62 yards. Freshman Josh Piper returned five kicks for 122 yards, including a 45 yarder in the second quarter.
The Cardinals finished with 457 yards in total offense, behind 242 passing yards and 215 yards on the ground. Quarterback Tyler Fenti threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns, two in the third quarter, while Chris Smith ran for three touchdowns, all in the first half. Nathan Nigolian hauled in six passes for 78 yards and two of Fenti's touchdowns.
Freshman Joshua Scales led the Bobcats with 13 tackles, including 0.5 for loss, while senior Matt Heacock registered nine stops, including 1.0 TFL. Freshman Niles Scott made four stops, two behind the line with one sack.
Frostburg State hosts Buffalo State next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
