Turnovers Plague Pirates in 51-7 Road Loss

More news about: Southwestern

SHAWNEE, Okla. – A trio of first half turnovers proved to be too much for Southwestern University Saturday as the Pirates fell, 51-7, at Oklahoma Baptist in non-conference college football action.

Southwestern (1-2) jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter over an Oklahoma Baptist (4-1) squad that is in year two of a transition to NCAA Division II.

Sophomore Justin Pelt found Kenneth Wynn down the sideline for a 23-yard touchdown putting the Pirates up 7-0. Pelt got the start at quarterback after an injury last week sidelined Bryan Hicks.

Although the score was the only points Southwestern managed to place on the scoreboard, the Pirates moved the ball into the red zone twice but was intercepted on each drive.

After three-and-outs from both teams, the Pirates took early momentum on Nik Kelly's league leading third interception; however, Kelly was tackled at the Southwestern 1-yard line and on the ensuing play Dylan Wilburn was tackled in the backfield for a safety.

From there the momentum shifted as Oklahoma Baptist answered with a touchdown in the corner of the end zone to take a 9-7 lead with 1:41 left in the first quarter. Two big plays at the start of the second quarter would put the Bison in the driver's seat as they scored from 80-yards and 56-yards building a 23-7 lead.

Justin Pelt finished 15-of-30 passing for 174 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Wynn had a career day finishing with six catches for 80 yards while adding the Pirates lone score.

Defensively the Pirates were unable to get into the Bison backfield as Justin Broussard recorded the only sack of the game. The Pirates did add 11 tackles for a loss while Broussard led the team with six tackles.

Southwestern was also plagued by uncharacteristic penalties as the Pirates were flagged 10 times for 102 yards while OBU only garnered one penalty.

The Pirates return home as they host Austin College next Saturday in Georgetown. Kickoff from Birkelbach Field is set for 3 p.m.
