ST. PAUL - The Martin Luther College football team was unable to slow down the Northwestern ground atack in a 41-27 loss in a rare Saturday night game that was delayed by half an hour due to storms in the area.
The Knights started strong offensively, scoring on three of their first four drives to take a 20-13 lead into halftime.
Luke Rothe led off the scoring for the Knights with an 18-yard run to give MLC a 6-0 lead. Dan Rodewald scored on a pair of touchdown runs, scoring from two and 15 yards out, respectively, to answer UNW scoring drives and give MLC the halftime edge.
Northwestern got things going on the ground in the second half, leading the way to four straight touchdown drives to start the half.
After the Eagles took a 26-20 lead with a pair of scores, Rothe put the Knights back ahead 27-26 with a 22-yard touchdown run, but they were unable to keep up with the UNW offense the rest of the way as the Eagles wore down the MLC defense down the stretch.
The Knights finished the game with 240 yards on the ground on 50 carries. Rothe led the way with 91 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, while Rodewald and Matt Olson added 78 and 71 yards, respectively.
Rodewald also led the Knights with 17 yards receiving on a pair of catches.
Defensively, the Knights allowed more than 300 yards on the ground, more than 200 of which came in the second half. Nick Kressin led MLC with 6.5 tackles and a first half interception. Chris Dean added 3.5 tackles and one tackle for loss.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, September 27, when they host Greenville in the Homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
