Guilford Throttles Greensboro in Gate City Soup Bowl

More news about: Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Matt Pawlowski threw for 239 yards and four touchdowns in Guilford College's 52-0 football win over visiting Greensboro College in the 18th annual Gate City Soup Bowl Saturday night.

The victory marked the Quakers' second straight in the series between Greensboro's two NCAA Division III football teams and their 10th overall. The contest marked the first shutout in the series and Guilford's 52 points were a Soup Bowl record.

A capacity crowd of 2,700 fans flowed around Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center for both teams' season opener. The fans contributed over 7,500 foodstuffs as part of the food drive conducted on both campuses and at the gate for the benefit of Greensboro Urban Ministry.

The Quakers' defense forced five turnovers, including interceptions by Daytwyn Rascoe andJerMario Gooch. Guilford registered three sacks and hassled Pride quarterbacks Ryan Throndset and Mac Graham into 16-for-38 passing for 176 yards. Greensboro did not penetrate Guilford's 20-yard line.

Pawlowski, Guilford's game MVP, looked sharp directing the Quakers' offense for three quarters. He completed 21 of 29 passes and also picked up 35 rushing yards. Four different Quakers had four catches, but Adam Smith made three grabs for 65 yards and two touchdowns. His 24-yard catch capped the game's opening drive and gave the hosts an early lead. His 18-yard scoring grab 13 seconds before halftime sent the Quakers into the locker room with a 31-0 edge. JuniorJosh Schow carried 26 times for a game-high 85 yards and rookie De'Eric Bell added 62 rushing yards off the bench.

The teams endured two delays, one mechanical and one weather related. The first stoppage lasted 20 minutes in the second quarter after a power spike cut off the stadium lights. Later in the frame, lightning was detected in the area, which triggered a 30-minute delay.

Greensboro linebacker Chase Sims earned the Pride's game Most Valuable Player honor with his game-high 17 tackles and one fumble recovery.
