Oberlin Football Completes Coaching Staff for 2014

More news about: Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College Head Football Coach Jay Anderson announced the addition of three new coaches to his staff.

After spending last season away from the program, Adam Sopkovich has returned as the team's wide receivers coach. Additionally, Adam Schmidt has been brought on board to serve as the defensive line coach and assist with player performance. Lastly, Mo Watts will assume the role of linebackers coach and also be the team's video coordinator.

"Each one of theses coaches bring a great foundation to our program," Anderson said. "I believe they will fit right in with our players and staff, and hit the ground running when we start camp here in a few weeks."

Sopkovich spent the 2013 season as the head coach at Warrensville Heights High School, but previously worked with the Yeomen from 2009 through 2012, coaching running backs and receivers during that time.

Schmidt comes to Oberlin from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he has served as the team's defensive line coach since 2008. A four-year starter at IUP, Schmidt graduated in 2007 and immediately began his coaching career at his alma mater.

In 2012 Schmidt helped the Crimson Hawks defense rank first in the nation at the NCAA Division II level. Last season the team finished 9-2 and 24th in the country, while also ranking second in red zone defense and fifth in total defense.

Watts arrives in Oberlin after having served as a graduate assistant at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the past two seasons. Working with the offensive line with the RedHawks, Watts will be making the transition to other side of the ball to instruct the Yeomen linebackers.

Watts, who began his coaching career as an undergraduate in 2011, worked with all phases of the program during his three years on staff.

All three coaches will officially begin their duties with the program on August 1. Coach Anderson also announced the Oberlin alum Adam Lowther will also be returning for his second season as the team's running backs coach.
