Brockport Wins Share of NJAC Title

More news about: Brockport

Freshman Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) ran for another 200+ yards in a game finishing with 244 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns leading The College at Brockport Football team to a 43-33 victory over Morrisville Saturday in Morrisville. The win gave Brockport a share of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) regular-season title as the Golden Eagles finished in a tie at the top of the standings with Rowan.

Brockport (7-3 Overall, 6-1 NJAC) must now wait until Sunday evening to find out if its record is good enough to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Playoffs. Rowan earned the NJAC automatic bid by virtue of a regular-season head-to-head victory over Brockport.

Against Morrisville, Andrews rushed for over 100 yard in the first half with two long runs but had two scoring runs in the second half when Brockport took the lead and his second TD sealed the victory in the fourth quarter.

Morrisville (3-7, 2-5) took the opening kickoff and marched down the field scoring on a short pass for the early lead.

Brockport answered with a drive all the way to the Morrisville one-yard line but failed to score. After forcing a Mustang punt on the ensuing drive, Brockport marched down the field again, this time scoring on a Shireem Cobb (Valley Stream, NY/Sewanhaka) one-yard plunge to tie the score.

The Golden Eagles started the second quarter with another drive starting from midfield. A key play in the drive was a pass from Jake Spalik (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) to quarterback Wayne Bonsell (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) for a 32-yard gain to the Morrisville 13-yard line but Bonsell was injured on the play and Chase Venuto (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) was inserted into the lineup and finished the game at quarterback.

The drive stalled inside the Morrisville 5-yard line and Brockport was stopped again on fourth down close to the goal line leaving the game tied at 7-7.

Two possessions later, Morrisville intercepted a pass and drove down the field to score taking a 14-7 lead with less than four minutes left in the first half.

The first play of the next Brockport possession, Andrews broke free for a 50-yard run setting up a Golden Eagles touchdown and a 14-14 tie with 1:09 left before the intermission.

Morrisville was able to drive down the field and kicked a 29-yard field goal as time expired to take a 17-14 lead into the locker room for the halftime break.

Morrisville opened the second half with another field goal for a six-point lead. Brockport answered with a 12-play, 90-yard drive capped by a 14-yard Andrews scoring run as Brockport took a 21-20 lead.

The Mustangs did not waste any time regaining the lead driving down the field and scoring on a third-and-goal play from the 10-yard line. A two-point conversion attempt failed and Morrisville led 26-21.

Brockport took over to start the fourth quarter and a Venuto pass to Eric Malave (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) from 14-yards out gave Brockport the lead and a two-point conversion pass to Spalik was complete an Brockport led 29-26.

The turning point of the game came on the first play of the ensuing Morrisville drive. Freshman Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) intercepted a pass on the first play and returned it 27 yards. Two plays later, Brockport was in the end zone again as Venuto hit Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) for a 21-yard score and a 36-26 lead.

Morrisville scored to trim the lead to 36-33 but with 4:09 left in the game, Venuto engineered another drive and on 2nd-and-8 from near midfield, Andrews broke another long run with a 41-yard TD that sealed the victory for Brockport.

Andrews finished with 244 yards and two scores while Venuto came on to complete 9-of-14 passes for 156 yards and two more TDs. Mrozek finished with 79 yards on three catches and Malave had four receptions for 61 yards.

Defensively, Anthony Bianchi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) led the way with 17 tackles, freshman Cortland Haines (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) had 11 stops, one for loss and two sacks and Brickler added nine tackles, an interception and a pass breakup.
