UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In their second straight game against a nationally ranked opponent, the Heidelberg University football team fell flat and lost 48-7 to John Carroll on Saturday. The loss knocks Heidelberg out of the race for the OAC title and an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament.

No. 14 John Carroll (9-0, 8-0 OAC) scored on the game's opening drive. DaQuan Grobsmith plunged in from one yard out.

Early in the second quarter, Mark Myers extended the Blue Streaks lead with a pair of touchdown passes to Aramis Greenwood.

The Student Prince offense got in rhythm in the second quarter. Long runs from Cartel Brooks and Michael Mees led to an 8-yard touchdown pass to Donteea Dye. It would be the only score of the game for Heidelberg.

The Blue Streaks responded right away. A two-yard rush from Tommy Michals capped off the fourth scoring drive of the game.

Just before halftime, Kresimir Ivcovic converted on a 31-yard field goal to give the home team a 31-7 lead. The Blue Streaks outgained Heidelberg 258-109 in the half.

Grobsmith scored his second touchdown to open up the second half. The senior scored from 11 yards out.

No. 10 Heidelberg (7-2, 6-2 OAC) knocked on the door in the middle of the third. Mees connected with Christian Dominguez for a pass down to the JCU 11. On the next play, Mees was sacked and momentarily knocked from the game. Two plays later, backup Jon Sandwisch scrambled to his left and fumbled the ball. The Blue Streaks picked it up and returned it to near midfield.

The Blue Streaks padded their lead in the 4th quarter before removing most of its starters. Myers finished with 387 yards and three touchdowns.

Heidelberg struggled to move the ball against the tenacious John Carroll defense. Brooks carried the ball 22 times for 118 yards and was held without a touchdown for the first time all season. Mees finished with 129 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-28 passing.

"They kicked our butt," said head coach Mike Hallett.

Heidelberg will travel to Berea on Saturday for the season finale. Kickoff with the Yellow Jackets is at 1:30 p.m.
