More news about: Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine -- Salve Regina knocked off Maine Maritime 42-8 in a New England Football Conference game Saturday. The Seahawks remained perfect in the NEFC at 5-0, 6-2 overall, while the Mariners dropped to 1-4, 1-6.

Dan Buonocore rushed for a game-high 136 yards for Salve Regina, Steven Wilken was 21 of 31 for 347 yards and Alex Hule (9 catches-109 yards) and Matthew Traynor (7-146) caught most of Wilken's passes to pace the Seahawks offense.

Billy Wehterbee carried 27 times for 127 yards for Maine Maritime and Michael Fahey added 43 yards on 14 carries. Joshua Doolan caught three passes for 44 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown.

Salve Regina benefitted from a Maine Maritime fumble on the opening kickoff of the game, and went ahead 7-0 five plays later on a one-yard run by Buonocore.

Maine Maritime took its only lead of the game after its defense forced a four-and-out with 7:34 left in the first quarter. The Mariners put together an 8-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fahey to Doolan. The drive was kept alive by a roughing the punter penalty on Salve and Wetherbee's four-yard run on fourth-and-three. Wetherbee's two-point run gave the Mariners an 8-7 lead.

The Seahawks took the lead for good early in the second quarter. Wilken capped a 9-play 80-yard drive with a 16-yard sprint and gave Salve Regina a 14-8 lead. Wilken hooked up with Traynor on 17-yard pass on Salve's next possession to put the Seahawks ahead 20-8.

Salve Regina added 22 unanswered points in the second half to secure the win. Wilken fired scoring passes to Hulme and Traynor and Pascale added a one-yard run.

The Mariners missed a scoring opportunity in the third quarter with a third-and-goal at the Salve 1. An errant pitch fell on the ground and Phil Terio fell on the ball for the Seahawks.

Danny Ives led Salve Regina's defense with 11 tackles. Joshua Burnett tallied eight and Troy Smith finished with seven.

Frank True picked up a game-high 12 tackles for Maine Maritime, with a pair of sacks. Josh Doyon and Michael Cummings each finished with nine tackles.

The Mariners return to action Saturday, 1 p.m., at MIT.
