Kuzbari, Defense Clutch as Tigers Keep the "Drum"

More news about: Occidental

CLAREMONT — The sacred "Drum" Trophy will stay in Eagle Rock for a 10th consecutive year.

Marc Kuzbari hit field goals of 38 and 32 yards, the Oxy defense had its best game of the season and the Tigers used a smash-mouth approach to win the 115th meeting between Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer, 13-7 at Merritt Field on Saturday.

Occidental now leads the all-time series of Southern California's oldest college football rivalry 64-48-3.

SCIAC leading rusher and Male Student-Athlete of the Week Kwame Do pounded the Sagehens for 155 yards on 29 carries. He broke 1,000 yards on the season in the second half, making him the first Oxy running back to run for at least that many since single-season rushing champ Gene Moore did it in 1968. The sophomore running back, who has developed into one of the nation's elite runners, is now at 1,016 yards, with two games to catch Moore's single-season record of 1,084.

Samuel Crizer scored Oxy's only touchdown on a nine-yard quarterback keeper in the first half.

In the second half, Kuzbari drilled a pair of field goals, putting Oxy up 13-7 with 10:33 left in the game.

Then it was up to the Tigers defense.

Adam Goltche dealt the Sagehens offense its first a setback with a seven-yard sack on first down. Oxy then forced Alex Bressler into two incomplete passes and a punt.

Pomona-Pitzer got the ball back with 5:30 to play and had success moving the ball down the field. The Sagehens converted a 3rd and 12, a 3rd and 9 and even a 4th and 4.

But on their final fourth down play, with the ball on Oxy's 15-yard line, Bressler's pass was tipped byDevin Chapman and fell incomplete, giving Oxy the win.

Ross Fiegener made key plays for the Tigers on defense. The inside linebacker led Oxy with 10 tackles and also had a sack and fumble recovery in the first half.

The Tigers didn't have much success through the air, but when they did they went to Devin Bullock, who caught five passes for 83 yards.

The Tigers improve to 4-3 overall and sit alone in third in the SCIAC at 3-2 with Cal Lutheran (2-2) still to play Whittier on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Oxy plays at Whittier on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and then closes the season at home against La Verne on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.
