DePauw Defense Stymies Gators; Tiger Pick up Third Straight Win

More news about: DePauw

Visiting Allegheny scored on its fourth play from scrimmage, but managed just 143 yards and six first downs the rest of the way as DePauw picked up a 23-7 North Coast Athletic Conference over the Gators.

The Tigers improved to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC with their third straight win, while Allegheny dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

Following the opening kickoff DePauw handed the ball off to tailback Nikko Sansone four straight times for 17 yards, but a pair of incomplete passes from quarterback Matt Hunt forced the Tigers to punt.

The Gators took over on their own 41 and picked up a first down before Nick Deichler got the call on second down and scampered 46 yards for the score. Ryan Mong's PAT made it 7-0 just 4:02 into the contest.

After stopping DePauw with a three-and-out, the Gators took over on their own 36 and picked up a pair of first downs before DePauw's Will Longthorne picked off Jon Nigro's third-down pass at the Tigers' 37.

The Tigers needed just five plays to knot the score as Hunt teamed with Barry Flynn for a 39-yard score with 3:30 left in the quarter.

Eric Malm booted the first of three field goals with 8:39 left in the half to make it 10-7 and the defense held the guests without a first down over the next four series. Late in the half the Tigers took over at the Allegheny 40 and drove to the Gators' 23 and Malm came on to nail a 41-yarder with just 11 seconds left.

The teams battled through a scoreless third before Malm connected from 22 yards with 9:41 remaining to extend the lead to 16-7. Dennis Callicutt picked off Nigro on the third play of the next Allegheny possession and Hunt teamed with J.D. Robinson for a 22-yard score with 7:10 left to round out the scoring.

Sansone topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time third year as he picked up 120 yards on 19 carries. Hunt completed 15 of 32 passes for 212 yards and a pair of scores with seven going to Flynn for 78 yards and four to Connor Jeffers for 68. Sansone added 37 receiving yards and 38 on three punt returns to total 195 all-purpose yards.

Deichler paced Allegheny with 71 yards on eight carries with Nigro completing 14 of 27 for 65 yards. Andrew Niklaus caught six passes for 23 yards.

Mitch Dwenger and Longthorne each had seven tackles for DePauw, while Patick Keller had the game's lone sack. Raysean Glenn led the Gators with nine stops.

DePauw outgained Allegheny 427-202 and held a 215-102 edge on the ground. The Tigers also held a 37:56-22:04 advantage in time of possession and ran 29 more plays. With his three field goals, Malm's career total moved to 21 which ranks second behind Tom Downham's 28 from 1984-87.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, November 2, when they host Wooster at 1 p.m.
