Albion Keeps Pace With MIAA Leaders

More news about: Albion

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Darrin Williams rushed for a season-high 122 yards and two touchdowns as Albion College kept pace with the leaders in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 31-21 victory over Kalamazoo College.

Albion scored on its first two possessions – quarterback Dominic Bona reached the end zone on a 15-yard run and Williams ripped off a 37-yard run – and it never trailed. Williams' second touchdown – a 2-yard run – and a 23-yard field goal by Cody Lehman extended Albion's lead to 24-7 early in the second quarter.

"We did a good job of coming out fast and getting the lead," Albion coach Craig Rundle said after his team improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 against MIAA rivals. "It is important to get a cushion with what Kalamazoo does offensively."

Cody Crawford hauled in a 32-yard strike from Bona to complete Albion's scoring in the fourth quarter. Albion was facing 4th-and-29, and Crawford was able to get his feet inbounds for the score.

"We made plays when we needed to," Rundle said. "Cody's catch was important because it allowed us to sustain Kalamazoo's touchdown later in the game."

Kalamazoo outgained Albion, 494-339, but the Hornets were penalized for 125 yards, quarterback Justin Danzy was intercepted twice, and they lost a fumble.

Rundle said the defense tightened when Kalamazoo reached the red zone. Kalamazoo turned the ball over on downs at the Albion 20 in the first quarter and Danzy was picked off by Mark Sheridan near the goal line in the third quarter.

Linebackers James Hartley and Brett McCarty led Albion's defensive effort. Hartley was credited with 15 stops, including 3 sacks. McCarty contributed 12 tackles, including 2 for loss, and an interception.

Albion will play its next two games at home, starting with an Oct. 26 date against Alma College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on the Schmidt-Fraser Field inside Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
