More news about: Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Visiting Salve Regina outscored Curry 29-7 in the second half, en route to a 43-10 win in New England Football Conference (NEFC) action Friday night in Milton. The Seahawks moved to 5-1 overall and stayed unbeaten in league play at 4-0. The Colonels fell to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in NEFC action.

Salve Regina opened the scoring at 10:56 of the first quarter, capping a short five-play, 30-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Steven Wilken (Ringwood, N.J.). The Seahawks also notched the only other points of the opening frame after sophomore Alex Hulme (Hopkinton, Mass.) blocked a punt by Curry junior Tim Crowley (Walpole, Mass.). The ball was picked up at the Colonels' 26 yard-line by sophomore Brad Kelly (Portsmouth, R.I.) who ran it in for the score.

The second quarter was dominated by the defenses, with the only points scored on a 39-yard field goal by Curry senior Zach Kumin (Needham, Mass.) just 25 seconds prior to intermission. Salve Regina led 14-3 at the break.

Less than two minutes into the second half, the Seahawks extended their lead to 20-3 on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Wilken to Hulme. Nine minutes later, the Colonels responded with an 11-yard touchdown run by junior fullback Jordan Shairs (Gloucester, Mass.) that closed the gap to 20-10. But that was as close as the host team would come as Salve Regina went on to score 23 unanswered points to account for the 43-10 final.

Curry held an edge in time of possession (32:20-27:40), but the Seahawks outpaced the Colonels in total offense, 395-303.

Wilken finished 14 of 27 for 215 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Senior running back Richie Edwards (Trumbull, Conn.) posted game highs for carries (17) and net rushing yards (108). Hulme had four catches for 66 yards and a TD.

Curry senior quarterback Kevin Fruwirth was 22 of 43 for 268 yards. Shairs finished with 44 yards on eight attempts. He also had a team high five receptions for 57 yards.

Junior Jiyon Ruffin amassed a game high 10 tackles (7 solo), including 2.5 tackles for loss (-8 yards). Sophomore Hayden Stanton (Wallingford, Conn.) had eight tackles, including five tackles for loss (-34 yards) and two sacks (-16 yards).

The Colonels' defense was led by senior defensive linemen Sam Calley (Weymouth, Mass.) and Kevin Janvier (Dorchester, Mass.), and junior linebacker Stanley Sainterlien (Providence, R.I.) who each collected five solo tackles. Janvier had three tackles for loss (-17 yards), including one sack (-13 yards). Sophomore Curtis Davila (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had the game's only interception.

Salve Regina stays on the road next weekend, visiting Central Connecticut State in a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m. Curry is off until November 2, traveling to NEFC rival Western New England for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
