Albion Is Turned Away By Central

More news about: Albion

PELLA, Iowa – Albion College gave Central (Iowa) College a tough challenge for three quarters Saturday, but the Dutch scored twice in the fourth quarter to hand the Britons a 31-6 setback in a non-league football game.

The teams exchanged punts through the first quarter. Central started a 10-play, 42-yard march late in the first quarter, and it culminated a minute into the second when Josh Osborn hauled in a 16-yard pass from Aaron Eiseler.

Central moved the ball to the Albion 24 on its next possession, but the defense came up with a pair of big plays as it forced Eiseler to fumble on third down and defensive back Terron Bridgeman stopped the Dutch running back for no gain on fourth down.

Albion's offense then engineered its only scoring drive. A roughing the kicker penalty gave the Britons a fresh set of downs near midfield and the offense moved steadily with Dominic Bona completing passes of 10 yards to Darrin Williams, 9 yards to Justin Losey, and 13 to Joseph Mayone to take the ball to the Central 17. Albion picked up a third down conversation when Bona hooked up with Zach Brewer for 6 yards to the Central 6. Bona hit Losey on a 6-yard scoring strike on the next play, but Albion's extra point kick failed and the score was 7-6 with 5 minutes left in the first half.

Central extended its lead to 14-6 when Osborn gashed the defense with runs of 7, 4, 9, 9, 7, and 5 to move the ball to the Albion 16. With time running down in the second quarter, Eiseler found Grant McArdle for the score.

Albion's offense stalled in the second half with two interceptions and a fumble. Osborn scored on runs of 12 and 18 yards and Kevin Sheldon kicked an 18-yard field goal for Central.

Bona racked up 239 passing yards by throwing to six receivers. Williams made 8 receptions for 62 yards. Mayone added 82 receiving yards on 6 six catches.

Bridgeman led the Albion defense with 12 tackles.

Albion will take a 2-2 record into its Oct. 12 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener against Trine University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
