LaGrange College head football coach Todd Mooney has announced the hiring of Matt Mumme as offensive coordinator. He joins the Panthers' coaching staff after working the past two seasons in the same capacity at Davidson (N.C.) College.

Mumme is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he played quarterback for his father, Hal. He began his coaching career as the quarterback coach at Southeastern Louisiana University, then went to New Mexico State as co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach before serving at McMurry University in Texas as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

In two seasons at McMurry, Mumme's War Hawks were second in Division III in passing yards and led all of college football with 45 touchdown passes. His offense produced 6,699 passing yards and 71 touchdowns, driving the team's first winning season in 10 years.

At Davidson, Mumme's offenses broke numerous school records. Quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff broke the school passing record and was sixth in the nation, while receiver Lanny Funsten became an All-American under Mumme, setting a school record with 100 receptions.

Mumme has coached seven all-conference quarterbacks and receivers. In addition to Funsten earning All-American honors, Mumme also coached All-American quarterback Martin Hankins at Southeastern Louisiana. Hankins threw for 7,777 yards and 65 touchdowns and was a finalist for the Walter Peyton Award, the Heisman Trophy for the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series.

"I'm extremely excited for the opportunity to get back to Georgia where I played in high school and the early years of my college career," Mumme said. "LaGrange is a great place, with a great reputation for outstanding athletics and excellent academics.

"I see a good bit of talent at LaGrange from what I have seen on film. The USA South is a fun conference to play in, and I look forward to working with Coach Mooney, the coaching staff and all the players to do some great things with the offense."

Coach Mooney said he is eager for Mumme to join the football staff. "His experience over many years as a coordinator and his enthusiasm toward recruiting will immediately strengthen our program," he said.

"Matt's scheme and philosophy will bring a great deal of excitement to our offense. I can't wait to get him on campus and get to work preparing for spring practice."

Mumme holds a degree in human environmental studies with a minor in business from the University of Kentucky, and also earned a master's in business administration from Southeastern Louisiana University.
