Macalester boosted its record to 5-3, clinching a .500-or-better mark on the season, by pulling away in the second half for a 41-14 win over Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D. and Mac's nationally-ranked defense held the Comets to 158 yards.
The Scots out-gained Mayville State (4-5) in total yards 420-158 and first downs 24-7. The Comets were 3-for-15 passing for only 21 yards and were held to 18:06 in total time of possession.
T. Joe Loiselle (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ran 32 times for 119 yards and Mike Adams (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) rushed for 95 yards and a pair of scores. Loiselle extends his school-record career rushing mark to 3,505 yards. Clark Bledsoe (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal) tossed three touchdown passes – one each to John Johnson (Jr., McKenzie, Tenn.), C.J. Smith (Jr., Ashland, Wis.) and Riley Koval (Sr., Mount Horeb, Wis.). Bledsoe's career totals, with two games to go, are 4,668 passing yards and 41 TD passes.
Reid Callahan (Jr., Atlanta, Ga. / St. Pius X) led the defensive effort with eight tackles, 2 ½ tackles for loss including a QB sack, and one pass breakup, and Aaron Gallegos (Sr., Lakeville, Minn. / North) picked off a Comet pass and returned it 34 yards to set up a second half touchdown. The Scots came in ranked in the top 20 in Division III in total defense and scoring defense.
Macalester led 21-14 at halftime, scoring in the final seconds of the second quarter to go on top.
Mac will host Augsburg next Saturday (Nov. 30) on Senior Day at 1 p.m. The Scots will honor a senior class of 20 players.
