Albion Escapes Olivet on Late TD

OLIVET, Mich. – Albion College set up a meaningful game with Adrian College next Saturday after Cody Crawford scored on a 30-yard pass from Dominic Bona late in the fourth quarter to lift the Britons to a 21-15 victory over Olivet College.

While Adrian clinched a share of its first MIAA championship since 1997 with a win over Kalamazoo College, Albion can drop the Bulldogs into a first-place tie if it can win the Nov. 3 contest at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.

Albion's winning drive was remarkable – a 10-play, 93-yard march that took just 3 ½ minutes. Backed up at its 7-yard line, Darrin Williams got the Britons started with an 11-yard run. Bona completed a couple of 8-yard passes to Zach Brigham and Williams added runs of 7 and 10 yards to move the ball to midfield.

The Britons were in danger of turning the ball over on downs, but Williams broke off a 10-yard run on 4th-and-1 and Bona found Crawford for the touchdown on the next play.

Albion took its first lead of the day when Bona hooked up with Brian Spencer for a 46-yard strike 1:30 into the second half to make the score 14-7.

Olivet took advantage of a short field to score the first touchdown of the game. The Comets marched 48 yards, capped by Tyre Alexander's 23-yard run, for a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Alexander tacked on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Comets seized a 15-14 lead with 3:11 left in the third quarter.

Albion sent the game to halftime tied at 7 when Williams scored on a 4-yard run in the final minute of the second quarter. Williams finished with 138 rushing yards on 30 carries.

Olivet finished with a 335-320 edge in total yards. Tom Strautz led the defense with two tackles for loss, including a sack, and fumble recovery.
