Rhodes College from Memphis, Tennessee, scored on a Dane Wilson 53-yard run on the first play of its second offensive possession and clinched the game on a 30-yard TD on a fourth-down conference with 2:29 to play to beat Macalester in St. Paul. This was the first meeting ever between these two schools and first Mac home game since Sept. 15.
Rhodes kept the Scots off the scoreboard by holding Macalester to a 2-for-16 third-down conversion rate. The Lynx out-gained Macalester 320-261 in total yardage, but Macalester held an 18-16 first down advantage.
T. Joe Loiselle (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ran for 67 yards and John Johnson (Jr., McKenzie, Tenn.) caught five passes for 82 yards for Macalester.
This could have easily been a scoreless tie had it not been for two big plays for Rhodes. The first was Wilson's 53-yarder on the first play of Rhodes' second possession, and the second was the fourth-down Lynx touchdown pass with just 2:29 to seal the victory.
Macalester's defense was led by Spencer Robinson (Sr., Chattaroy, Wash. / Riverside) and Reid Callahan (Jr., Atlanta, Ga. / St. Pius X) with nine tackles each. Robinson also forced a fumble and collected one of two Macalester interceptions and Callahan added a fumble recovery. David Melms (Sr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) also picked off a Rhodes aerial, returning it 32 yards in the third quarter to give the Scots a scoring opportunity.
Dane Wilson rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown for Rhodes and quarterback Blake Box was 17-for-25 for 141 yards. Joseph Raby led the defensive cause with 13 tackles. The Lynx improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Scots are 3-3 and looking to snap a three-game skid next Saturday (Oct. 20) when they host Trinity Bible (N.D.) at 7 p.m.
