Benedictine Races to 4-0 in NAC

The Benedictine University football team improved to 4-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference with a 41-7 win at Maranatha on Saturday.

John Borsellino opened the scoring on the second possession of the game for Benedictine, scooting through the Crusaders for a 59-yard run to hand the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 10:53 to play in the first quarter.

The rout was on after three touchdowns in the second quarter extended the lead to 27-0 at halftime. ON the second play of the second quarter Andrew Taylor stepped in front of a Phil Littrell pass and raced into the endzone from 17 yards out for his second interception return for a TD this season, extending the lead to 14-0.

Ben Lockton forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing Maranatha possession, leading to a 37-yard pass from Matt Brown to Chris Schultz. The extra point was blocked and Benedictine led 20-0 with 11:34 remaining in the half.

Following a three and out, the Eagles opened a 10-play drive finished with Brown hitting Brandin Austin on a three-yard pass to pad the lead to 27-0 with 3:40 left in the half.

Borsellino's second touchdown run of the game on the opening drive of the second half capped an 11-play drive, finding the endzone on a seven-yard run to up the lead to 34-0. The final Benedictine points of the game scored when Brown threw his third touchdown of the game, connecting with Schultz again for a 62-yard score with 1:44 to play in the third.

The Eagles finished with just under 500 yards for the game while holding Maranatha to just 77 yards total with six first downs. Borsellino totaled 122 yards with two touchdowns on 21 carries as Benedictine netted 260 yards on the ground. Brown finished 14-for-21 with 226 yards and three touchdowns. Schultz reeled in five passes for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Benedictine (5-2, 4-0) sits alone in first place after Lakeland lost to Concordia Chicago 2-17. Lakeland visits the Sports Complex next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
