Host Sewanee scored on each of its first three possessions and defeated DePauw by a 30-7 score at Harris Stadium. DePauw dropped to 1-4 with its fourth straight loss, while Sewanee improved to 3-4.
Sewanee marched 80 yards in just six plays on its opening drive with Ben Cleveland scoring on a 4-yard run. The extra point was off the mark and the hosts held a 6-0 lead with 10:11 left in the first.
Sewanee's defense stopped DePauw on downs and the offense needed just five plays to cover 85 yards with Zeke Wilson rushing for a 43-yard score to make it 13-0 with 5:57 remaining in the first.
The Tigers drove to the Sewanee 30, but Eric Malm's 47-yard field goal attempt was short and Sewanee's Garrett Schlosser made it 16-0 with a 27-yard field goal early in the second.
On DePauw's fourth play of the ensuing series, Sewanee's De'Nard Ford picked off Jackson Kirtley and returned the interception for a score to make it 23-0 with 7:19 left in the half.
DePauw's Taylor Wagner gathered in the resulting kickoff on his own five and scampered 95 yards for the visiting Tigers' lone score of the contest. It was DePauw's first kickoff return for a touchdown since JaMarcus Shephard had two against Millsaps on October 25, 2003.
Neither team cross midfield the remainder of the half as Sewanee went to the intermission with a 23-7 lead.
After recovering a fumble early in the third, DePauw drove to the Sewanee 17, but Alfonza Knight intercepted Kirtley in the end zone and halted the threat.
DePauw's defense stopped Sewanee on fourth down from the DePauw 27 on the next possession and then drove 72 yards but Kirtley's fourth-down pass from the 2-yardline was incomplete. After another defensive stop, DePauw drove to the Sewanee 22, but couldn't convert on fourth-and-15.
Sewanee wrapped up the scoring as Wilson scored on an 8-yard run with 1:25 left.
Armani Cato made his first collegiate start for DePauw and rushed for 84 yards on 18 carries. Nikko Sansone moved to running back from wide receiver, totaled 40 yards in 11 tries. Kirtley threw for 133 yards, but was picked off twice and sacked five times. Wagner caught three passes for 37 yards in the loss. Wagner totaled 222 all-purpose yards for the Tigers.
Cleveland totaled 54 rushing yards followed by Wilson with 53 and Lee Schurlknight with 50. Schurlknight completed 2-of-6 passes for 85 yards.
DePauw held a 16-14 advantage in first downs, but Sewanee led in total yards 348-240 and in yards per play (6.8-3.2)
Michael Fultz totaled seven tackles for DePauw including two for loss, while Sewanee's John Davenport had nine. Andrew Walters led the hosts with 1.5 sacks.
DePauw returns to action on Saturday, October 22, when it travels to Ohio Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. contest.
