Guilford seeking new head coach

More news about: Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College Athletic Director Tom Palombo announced Monday that head football coach Kevin Kiesel will not return next year. Kiesel's teams compiled a 24-36 overall record in six seasons, including an 0-10 mark in 2010.

Palombo has launched a national search to find Kiesel's replacement. Guilford's assistant football coaches will share in the administration of the program until a new head coach is named.

"We are grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm Kevin put into coaching our football team the past six seasons," Palombo said.  "We're seeking a coach who will develop student leaders on and off the field. We want someone who can achieve competitive success that builds pride on the campus and among alumni and other supporters."

Guilford set or tied 42 school records and 14 Old Dominion Athletic Conference marks under Kiesel's direction. His 2006 and 2007 teams were 6-4 for the school's first consecutive winning campaigns since 1990-91. His 24 wins stand fifth among 22 head coaches in the team's history.

The Quakers led NCAA Division III in passing yards per game twice in Kiesel's first four years and boasted one of the nation's top-rated offenses. Quarterback Josh Vogelbach '08 set 19 NCAA Division III passing marks under Kiesel, including career passing yards. He is one of 17 Guilford students who have combined for 24 all-conference commendations from 2005-09.

Kiesel's overall head coaching record in 18 seasons is 88-95-1. The 1981 Gettysburg College graduate made previous head-coaching stops at Millersville University, Fordham University and Albright College.

The Quakers completed the 2010 season Saturday with a 27-3 loss at Emory & Henry College that sealed Guilford's first winless campaign since 1972.
