Kohawks cruise by Duhawks 34-6

More news about: Coe

After winning the toss, the Loras defense held Coe to a three-and-out on their first possession, but it was special teams play that sparked the first points of the game.  After a 35-yard punt by sophomore Chase Cooling (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), senior Seth Johnson (Glidden, Iowa/Glidden-Ralston) forced a fumble from Loras' Nick Lloyd, with freshman Ben Comer (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) recovering it at the Duhawk 25-yard line.

Despite two penalties on the drive, Boyle threw a five-yard touchdown pass to senior Ryan Jones (Harpers Ferry, Iowa/Waukon), just the second of the season and fifth of Jones career.  The pass put Boyle over 5,000 career passing yards, the fourth most in school history.

Three punts between the two teams closed out the first quarter with the Kohawks leading 7-0.  Following a 20-yard run from Leiran, Boyle plunged in from three-yards out with 11:50 to play in the first half, giving Coe a 14-0 lead.

Coe forced Loras to punt and it took the Kohawks just one play to put more points on the scoreboard.  Boyle found Jared Kuehner (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) for an 84-yard touchdown strike, the second time Boyle has found Kuehner for 70-plus yards this season.

The pass put Boyle over the 2,000-yard mark passing for the second-straight season, as he joined assistant coach Andy TeKippe and former IIAC MVP Joe Brannen as the only three players in school history with multiple 2,000-plus yard seasons.

On the final drive of the first half, the Kohawks came away with a big defensive stop, holding the Duhawks on back-to-back plays of needing just three yards from the Coe 25-yard line.  After two rushing plays, the Kohawks took a 21-0 lead into halftime.

Neither team could get anything going early in the third quarter until the Kohawks took over for the second time in the half with 5:36 to go.  On third-and-one, Boyle found a wide open Tyler Takes (Ely, Iowa/Solon) for a 49-yard touchdown pass.  It was Takes' team-high fifth scoring reception of the season and the 14th of his career, giving the Kohawks a 28-0 lead with 3:42 left in the third quarter.

Coe scored on its opening possession of the fourth quarter.  On the third play of the quarter, Boyle found senior Andrew Squires (Center Point, Iowa/Center Point-Urbana) for a 23-yard reception on 3rd-and-15.  Facing third-and-goal, Boyle used the blocking of his offensive line to score his 16th rushing touchdown of the season, moving him to fourth on the all-time single-season touchdown list.

Following the Kohawk score, Loras went 75-yards in six plays and 1:51 to score its first points of the game.  The Duhawks went for the onside kick, but failed to recover.

The Kohawks finished the day with 187 yards rushing and 277 passing, while holding the Duhawks to just 70 yards on the ground.  Coe converted 9-of-14 third-down conversions, while Loras was just 3-of-13.

Leiran finished with a game-high 128 yards rushing, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark for his career.  Boyle was 12-of-17 passing for 251 yards and three touchdowns, moving to fourth on the all-time touchdowns list with 41 in his career.  Kuehner finished with a career-high 117 yards on four catches, while Takes added 74 on three grabs.

Senior Elliot Rausa (Waterloo, Iowa/Columbus) connected on 4-of-5 point after attempts, giving him 52 points scored on the season.  He joined Michael Herzberger as the only two kickers in school history to score over 50 points all four years of their careers.

On the defensive side, junior Ben Carr (Clinton, Iowa/Prince of Peace) and Johnson led the way with eight tackles apiece.  Senior Nate Clear (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) added two sacks, giving him 13 on his career, as he moved into fifth on the school's all-time sacks chart.

The Kohawks return to action next Saturday, as they host Buena Vista.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Clark Field, in the final home game of the season.
