Franklin sets scoring record in rout at Anderson

More news about: Franklin

ANDERSON, Ind. – Franklin College romped past football host Anderson 69-10, setting a single-game school record for points, at the Ravens' Macholtz Stadium today.

The Griz's 69 points were one better than the previous best mark of 68 FC scored against Manchester in 1988.

Senior quarterback Kyle Ray threw for four touchdown passes, junior running back Reece Craig rushed for a pair of scores and freshman cornerback Zack Corpe returned an interception for a TD twice to help the Griz improve to 6-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 7-1 overall. Anderson fell to 2-4 in the HCAC and 2-6.

Franklin, which has outscored its six HCAC opponents 304-56, leads Hanover and Defiance by one game, heading into its Nov. 6 home game with Earlham at Faught Stadium.

Though Franklin's offense put seven touchdowns up on the scoreboard, Corpe produced stand-out numbers on defense and special teams. The freshman made five solo tackles, one of which forced a fumble that he then recovered. That happened when the Griz punted on its first possession, and Corpe's hit resulted in Franklin having the football at the Ravens' 12-yard-line and scoring its first touchdown two plays later.

Corpe's 21-yard interception return for a touchdown midway in the second quarter broke the game wide open, putting his team up 34-3. His other interception return for a TD was a 45-yard play early in the third period. Corpe also broke up two passes.

The Griz defense, which is 13th against the run among all NCAA Division III schools this week, held Anderson to just 25 rushing yards. Senior linebackers Adam Wheat and Nick Cochran made 11 total tackles each. Teddy Henkle, also a senior linebacker, had 10 total tackles and blocked a punt that junior teammate David O'Rourke  picked up and carried 29 yards into the end zone in the second quarter.

Ray, who completed 14 of 20 passes for 191 yards, hit senior split end Matt Zmich for touchdowns of 5 and 47 yards in the opening period. After the Ravens got on the board with a 41-yard field goal by Aaron Thomas, Ray connected with senior running back Mitch Downs on a 24-yard TD pass play before the quarter ended and threw a 39-yard scoring pass to sophomore split end Kyle Linville before O'Rourke's touchdown.

Craig rushed for a 25-yard touchdown in the second quarter, putting FC up 27-3, and ran for a 35-yard score midway in the third period. The junior finished with 82 rushing yards on nine carries. Franklin's last TD was scored by running back Darryl Stott with almost 10 minutes left in the ballgame.

The Grizzlies finished with 397 yards of total offense – 237 yards in the air and 160 on the ground.

Anderson's lone touchdown was scored by Joe Davidson on a 42-yard pass by Mitch Grider.at the start of the fourth quarter.
