Defiance Sets Coressel Stadium Record with 49-7 Win Over Anderson

More news about: Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College shredded Anderson, 49-7, on Saturday to set a new Coressel Stadium scoring record. The Jackets also moved to 4-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for the first time since the 2007 season.

The 49 points were the most for a DC team since scoring a 59-14 win over Bluffton at Defiance High School on November 6, 1993 and the 42-point spread marked the program's largest margin of victory since winning, 42-0, over Rockford on September 22, 2001.

Drew Kuesel led DC to its sixth-straight victory against Anderson and set new career highs with 225 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The junior running back averaged 8.3 yards per carry over 27 attempts with a pair of runs over 40 yards, including a 43-yard strike to cap the scoring early into the fourth quarter.

Kuesel had help, as Rick Powell added 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go with a 21-yard touchdown strike through the air to Jon Carrabino.

The five offensive scores proved to be plenty for the DC defense, as the Jackets had six takeaways and two defensive touchdowns to silence the HCAC's second-rated offense. The Ravens were held below their season averages by over 200 yards and 25 points, as Defiance limited AU to just 1.2 yards per rush.

Kyle Longsdorf led the charge once again, as the free safety piled up 13 more tackles and returned an interception 20 yards for a score. The touchdown return marked the second-straight week that Longsdorf had returned an interception for a score and the third-straight game that he had hauled in an interception.

Kadeem Watson and Anthony Sierra also picked off Raven passes, while Joemese Scott recovered a pair of fumbles and ran one back five yards for a touchdown. Patrick McDonald, Robbie Lakes and Austin Hedderly also notched one sack.

Defiance posted its third-straight triumph, outscoring Mount St. Joseph, Earlham and Anderson by a 104-21 count during that span. The Jackets have averaged 266.3 rushing yards per game in those three victories, while racking up 13 takeaways and holding the opposition to only 2.7 yards per carry.

The win was the 35th for Rob Taylor as the head coach of Defiance College, moving the eighth-year mentor to within a single victory of tying Malen Luke (1988-1993) for the most wins of any head coach in program history. Luke's record-setting 36th victory came via DC's 59-14 win against Bluffton in the aforementioned 1993 season finale.

Defiance (4-3, 4-1 HCAC) will look to continue its strong play when it hosts Rose-Hulman (4-3, 3-2 HCAC) on October 30 at 1:30 pm. The game will be the final home contest of the 2010 campaign for the Jackets.

DC will honor its senior class prior to the start of the game and will also join the NCAA in hosting its annual "Take a Kid to the Game" promotion.
